Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready. A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign.

Cults prey on the very attributes that make us human: our desire to belong, to find a deeper meaning in life, to live everyday with divine purpose. Their existence creates a sense that any one of us, at any time, could step off the cliff’s edge and fall into that daunting abyss of manipulation and unhinged dedication to a misplaced cause. Perhaps it’s this mindset that keeps us so utterly obsessed and desperate to learn more, or it’s that the stories are so bizarre and unsettling that we are simply in awe of the mechanics that make these infamous groups tick.

In the number-one New York Times best seller Mindhunter, John Douglas, who headed the FBI's elite Investigative Support Unit, told the story of his brilliant and terrifying career tracking down some of the most heinous criminals in history. Now, in Journey into Darkness, Douglas profiles vicious serial killers, rapists, and child molesters. He is straightforward, blunt, often irreverent, and outspoken, but takes pains not to glorify any of these murderers.

Description
The horrific true story of serial kidnapper, rapist, and killer Robert Hansen’s reign of terror
As oil-boom money poured into Anchorage, Alaska the city quickly became a prime destination for the seedier elements of society: prostitutes, pimps, con men, and criminals of all breeds looking to cash in. However, something even worse lurked in their midst.
To all who knew him, Robert Hansen was a typical hardworking businessman, husband, and father. But hidden beneath the veneer of mild respectability was a monster whose depraved appetites could not be sated. From 1971 to 1983, Hansen was a human predator, stalking women on the edges of Anchorage society - women whose disappearances would cause scant outcry, but whose gruesome fates would shock the nation. After his arrest, Hansen confessed to 17 brutal murders, though authorities suspect there were more than 30 victims.
Alaska State Trooper Walter Gilmour and writer Leland E. Hale tell the story of Hansen’s twisted depredations - from the dark urges that drove his madness to the women who died at his hand and finally to the authorities who captured and convicted the killer who came to be known as the “Butcher Baker.”

In-depth, Qualitative Digest on the Case
Author, James Fouhey, covers the details and the investigation process with great authority. A highly recommended read.
As with most power/control motivated serial killers, you never uncover all their deeds, and this deviant is no exception, so with no blame to the author, much is left unknown in this case. But it is of no consequence, as although these perps think they're so intelligent/unique, they are all cookie cutters of each other as to motivation and outcome - simply baseline beings who live useless lives, who must be caught to be stopped, and forever imprisoned.

A fantastic account of a true monster
As an avid true crime fan, this title popped up in my recommended reading. Having never heard of Robert Hansen, I first thought this book was about Alaskan Serial killer Israel Keyes. WOW.. now I know. This man was a walking nightmare and textbook serial killer. The book is fantastic. Superbly narrated and I burned through it in one day. Highly recommend.

Interesting true crime
If you like true crime, you'll probably like "butcher-baker" . I thought it was well written and decently narrated, though the narrator could have stood to be a tad more "exiting".

Cinematic True Crime
This book has trouble finding the balance between chilling quasi-screenplay depiction and pinpoint-accurate documentary. Alaska state trooper Walter Gilmour (who helped capture Robert Christian Hanson) and writer Leland E. Hale put together a captivating chronicle encompassing the evil deeds, pursuit, and capture of a textbook serial killer in Anchorage in the 1970s and early 80s. They certainly use interviews, forensic reports, and court documents to inform their narrative, but elect to use them to feed a detective story atmosphere.
It must be noted that the book is well-conceived, well-written, and well-paced - but again I point out that 'Butcher Baker' employs a little too much artistic license.. it has the feel of fiction. Putting hypothetical thoughts into victims' minds during crimes adds tension but is taken a step too far in this case (I personally prefer more realism in my nonfiction).
James Fouhy is an above-average narrator (Audible Studios were wise to select him for this project). His diction is excellent and his sombre tone fits the subject matter perfectly. The voice-acting - particularly the unsettling depiction of the stuttering Hanson - is notable. The biggest drawback in the performance is plodding pacing (although speeding playback to 1.25X corrected that deficiency nicely). Overall, I was impressed with the professional reading.
Altogether this book is a "decent" example of True Crime literature. If, like me, you are a definite fan of the genre, this 6.5/10 effort is worth your Credit. If you're new to it, maybe start with Ann Rule or Jack Olsen - and give books like this one (or Philip Carlo's stuff) a later try.
(Broadening your exposure and deciding if you prefer the Lifetime-Movie-script approach is worth doing - it's just a little too mystery novelish to start I think)

Solidly OK
Not as cheesy or poorly written as some True Crime, but ultimately not as fulfilling as it could've been. We only get a tiny glimpse into the world or Robert Hansen
