Publisher's Summary

The surprising story of Pilates - the man and the method.

Part biography, part history, and part memoir, Caged Lion untangles for the first time Joseph Pilates’s opaque life story and the perilous journey of his exercise program known the world over as Pilates.

This is the story of Joseph Pilates, a gifted man who immigrated to the United States at forty-three with no assets or credentials. He not only invented an exercise regimen - which today is practiced by more than ten million people - but in the process, reinvented himself.

John Howard Steel brings Joseph Pilates and his eponymous exercise regime to life from his unique perspective as a student, friend, and confidant. Joe’s influence profoundly changed Steel’s life; in turn, Steel was crucial for the survival of the Pilates Method and Joe’s legacy. Steel’s vivid account traces the expansion of Pilates from a small cadre of dedicated adherents, through two periods of near extinction, to the global sensation it is today. Steel describes Joseph Pilates’s years as a prisoner during World War I, Joe’s motivation to discover his system of exercises, his inspirational teaching technique, and the unique attraction of the Pilates Method. It’s quite a story.

Loved!!!!

I loved this book! I loved being taken into the author's story about his personal history with Joseph Pilates, and also the overview of Contrology to Pilates after Joe's death. The author reads his own book which is especially charming and endearing. I felt transported by this... like I was hearing a story from a real person, not just listening to a book. I have been a long time Pilates student, but much of the history and chain of events of it's lineage wasn't clear to me. This book connected the history and significant events and gave me an overview of this important process and transformation which is Pilates, as we know it today, steeped in yesterday. This is what I love about Pilates, it is has a real connection to a lineage, and through that there is discipline, loyalty and respect to something greater than an exercise routine. I heard this in the author's sharing... even that he wrote this book and chose to read it himself, at age 84, feels like an honouring of his love for Pilates, and more importantly, Joseph, his teacher. To me, John (author) was very blessed in his life meeting Jospeh and Clara Pilates, and now he blessed us with his recollection and his sharing in this book... for me this book is a gift!

I had to speed it up 1.4 x in order for it not to be so slow. but I did enjoy the book itself

Great book but a tough listen.

Really enjoyed the content but the elderly author should not have read it himself. He is a very moist talker. It would have been far better having someone else record the audiobook.
