Publisher's Summary

Winner of the 2021 Hayek Book Prize

A leading conservative intellectual defends charter schools against the teachers' unions, politicians, and liberal educators who threaten to dismantle their success.

The black-white educational achievement gap - so much discussed for so many years - has already been closed by Black students attending New York City's charter schools. This might be expected to be welcome news. But it has been very unwelcome news in traditional public schools whose students are transferring to charter schools. A backlash against charter schools has been led by teachers unions, politicians and others - not only in New York, but across the country. If those attacks succeed, the biggest losers will be minority youngsters for whom a quality education is their biggest chance for a better life.

Great arguments for charter schools

Great book for American Charter schools. Wish there was some information on Canadian charter schools.

Absolutely Amazing

Before starting this book, I did not know much about Charter Schools other than the good things I've heard about them from teachers and parents. I was ignorant to the aggression and unfounded critisism that they faced from teacher's unions and politicians. This book is filled with facts about the issues that public schools face and how Charter schools have been able to produce better success outcomes for students, because when it comes to education, that is the most important thing, right? Thomas Sowell uses sound rational and a wealth of data to present his arguments in well rounded fashion.

Absolutely terrific

Thomas Sowell never disappoints. This book, like all his others, sugar coats nothing and treats the reader (or listener) like an adult who can make up their own mind. I sincerely appreciate how dr Sowell uses evidence to support his claims and allows readers to draw their own conclusions. A great work.

very good book, informative

something that is missing nowadays is a clear understanding of what is going on around us. Whether it is on education, politics, social issues or global realities, accurate, quality, information seems to be difficult to come by. however books like this are very needed. And I am grateful that I have had an opportunity to be exposed to this material. I highly recommend this book and this author. Spend time consuming and digesting his work. and then maybe we really can make this world a better place.
