Awesome

Another Warhammer masterpiece and one of my favorite heroes for the realism of the character

Flashman meets 40k with great success!

Sandy Mitchell returns to their much lauded 'Ciaphas Cain' series with "For The Emperor," and what a return it is. The Cain novels have always been a clear homage to George MacDonald Fraser's 'Flashman' series, replacing Harry Flashman with a Commisar officer from the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It may seem like an odd mix, but Mitchell regularly pulls it off, creating a fun, adventurous parallel to the often depressing "grim-dark" of the Warhammer setting. Stephen Perring is particularly 'Flashy' in his narration, and any fans of Flashman, Warhammer, or adventurous sci-fi in general should give "For The Emperor" a shot. #Audible1

Read beautifully

The story is very interesting, and the voices give it so much more life. There’s some moments in the story that made me chuckle.

Blackadder and Baldrick enter the 40K Universe.

Follow Cain, a scoundrel who suffers from the most extremes of probabilities and despite always looking out for himself, ends up being a very charming hero in this morbidly satire adventure.

A good 40K story for newcomers.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to an upbeat story. I choose this book to introduce my boomer father to 40K.
He really liked it and we had some good laughs together.
May the fortunes always be in the Commissar’s favour.

Laughter in the Grimdark

Despite all sayings to the contrary, there is a touch more than war to be found in the grim, dark future of the 41st Millennium. In Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain, novels, there is, in fact, a great deal of levity. This delightful adventure manages to infuse some very welcome humour into the 41st Millennium, without throwing too much of a lampshade over the setting's inherent ridiculousness. Neither does it skimp on the action or brutality that 40K fans should rightly expect in their reading.

Ciaphas Cain is something of an anomaly among Imperial Guard Commissars. Far from the taciturn, steely-eyed killers who enforce discipline with a bolt round to the head, Cain prefers to rely on charisma and compromise. He's also an abject coward. His progressive approach to regimental morale is motivated primarily by thoughts of self-preservation, as are most of his seemingly shrewd actions on the battlefield. Cain is, however, the walking embodiment of the "Task Failed Successfully" meme. His uncanny luck (good or bad) turns just about every one of his attempts to wuss out of a fight into an opportunity to engage in thrilling heroics. As a result, Cain is regarded as a bona fide hero. It is a reputation he abhors, but doesn't dare besmirch.

The result is a series of madcap adventures, kicked off with this wonderful volume. Mitchell's story, written as Cain's own memoir, is dripping with eloquent and refreshing humour. Cain's self-deprecating narrative is at once sharp, vulnerable, reflective and hilarious. The characters who surround him range from madcap to completely world-serious. Despite the ostensibly grimdark setting, none feel out of place in the story. In fact, the sheer range of tone and character stands in such contrast to the often self-serious veneer of other 40K stories as to render Cain's tale refreshingly human. It elevates the Warhammer Universe through parody. It brings the beautiful ridiculousness of the setting front and centre, while still honouring the game and fans it was written for.

The voice actors are more than equal to maintaining that balance, I'm pleased to say. Perring, Rawlins and Gregory each understood the assignment. Perring and Rawlins have especially great chemistry as the imposter syndrome-laden Cain, and the cheeky Amberly Vail, respectively. Though they never share dialogue together, the playfulness of their deliveries really makes the characters sound like teasing friends (or, perhaps, more...). Gregory as General Sula embodies all the self-righteous zeal a soldier of the Imperium is expected to have. Each one of them sounds like they belong perfectly in the 41st Millennium. They are a delight to listen to, plain and simple.

If you're eager to explore the lore of the Warhammer Universe, but would like a laugh in among all the tragedy and mayhem, might I suggest "For the Emperor"? It'll keep you in-universe and in-stitches simultaneously.
