Publisher's Summary

In the dark days of a Shetland winter, torrential rain triggers a landslide that crosses the main Lerwick-Sumburgh road and sweeps down to the sea. At the burial of his old friend, Magnus Tait, Jimmy Perez watches the flood of mud and peaty water smash through a croft house in its path. Everyone thinks the croft is uninhabited, but in the wreckage he finds the body of a dark-haired woman wearing a red silk dress. In his mind she shares his Mediterranean ancestry, and soon he becomes obsessed with tracing her identity. Then it emerges that she was already dead before the landslide hit the house. Perez knows he must find out who she was and how she died.

Fabulous!!!

Kenny Blyth could read the phone book and I’d buy it! Great story and fabulous narration. It doesn’t hurt that Ann Cleeves is a brilliant storyteller and therefore, the combination is doubly fabulous. Can’t wait for the next one in the series, as long as it’s read by KB!

great mystery story

Ann Cleeves writes an excellent mystery, as usual. The characters are well developed, the setting feels very present, and the suspense builds.

because I loved the tv series...

I loved watching Shetland, the tv series. I know the books came first, but being so in love with the show, I found the book a wee bit less detailed and enchanting. still ... good performance, and who doesn't like a mystery?
