Story
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill 12 students and a teacher and wound 24 others before taking their own lives. For the last 16 years, Sue Klebold, Dylan's mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong?

Story
Ten years after the school massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado, school shootings are a new and alarming epidemic. While sociologists have attributed the trigger of violence to peer pressure, such as bullying and social isolation, prominent psychologist Peter Langman, argues here that psychological causes are responsible. Drawing on 20 years of clinical experience, Langman offers surprising reasons for why some teens become violent. Langman divides shooters into three categories, and he discusses the role of personality, trauma, and psychosis among school shooters.

Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Publisher's Summary
Expanded with a new epilogue
"The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror..."
So begins a new epilogue, illustrating how Columbine became the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders". It is a false script, seized upon by a generation of new killers. In the wake of Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this plague grows more urgent every year.
What really happened April 20, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we "know" is wrong. It wasn't about jocks, Goths, or the Trench Coat Mafia. Dave Cullen was one of the first reporters on scene and spent 10 years on this book, which is widely recognized as the definitive account.
With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on mountains of evidence, insight from the world's leading forensic psychologists, and the killers' own words and drawings. Cullen paints raw portraits of two polar opposite killers. They contrast starkly with the flashes of resilience and redemption among the survivors.
What the critics say
"A chilling page-turner, a striking accomplishment given that Cullen's likely readers almost certainly know how the tragic story ends...I knew Cullen was a dogged reporter and a terrific writer, but even I was blown away by the pacing and story-telling he mastered in Columbine, a disturbing, inspiring work of art." (Salon)
"A remarkable book. It is painstakingly reported, well-organized and compellingly written . . . For any reader who wants to understand the complicated nature of evil, this book is a masterpiece." (The Seattle Times)
"Leveraged for political ends by Michael Moore on film and adopted for convenience by the news media as shorthand for teenage violence, Columbine has begun to feel as impenetrable and allegorical as Greek myth. So the intensive reporting of Denver-based journalist Dave Cullen is welcome. . . Cullen creates more than a nuanced portrait of school shooters as young men. He writes a human story - a compassionate narrative of teenagers with guns (and bombs, too), and the havoc they wreak on a school, a community, and America." (Esquire)

Exhaustive and Insightful
Dave Cullen pens an engrossing exposé of one of the pivotal events in US history. American society changed after this horrific episode, which took innocence away from children doing nothing more than learning to be adults - armed school guards, active-shooter drills, on-campus metal detectors.. all became commonplace after Columbine.
The author did a mindblowing amount of research to inform this narrative - ensuring it's factual basis and providing pinpoint accurate chronology - and then wrote a prose-informed story to relate the tale. Yes, it's liberally dramatised.. Yes, Cullen takes significant artistic license.. Yes, the author is fairly sympathetic to Eric Harris and (especially) Dylan Klebold.. but this well-written book is captivating, immersive, and gives an unusually balanced view. These were not "bullied losers" or "jock-haters" or "Trenchcoat Mafia" goth weirdos.. Law Enforcement, Community Leaders, and Media made jawdropping (but understandably human) mistakes..
That is perhaps the most frightening aspect of what happened beginning at 11:19 AM on April 20, 1999: this nightmare looks like it could have taken place in Everytown, USA - it's a straight-up warning.
Don Leslie is a very good reader. His voice is clear, his emotiveness keeps the listener interested, and he injects legitimate gravitas into the text. Leslie has a voice that's comfortable to listen to for hours. The main drawback in the performance is poor pacing.. I had to increase playback speed to 1.10X to get the optimal rate.
After adding quality production values into the calculation, this is a 9/10 recording of a spine-tingling, provocative book. I can easily recommend.
ASIDE: I can't express how much it pisses me off when authorities lie and engage in cover-ups to make themselves look better. That's why we have persistent misinformation and conspiracy theories (tinfoil hat guys point at this stuff and say "See!?! They're all lying to you!!")
Just say "We screwed up.. and *this* is what we can do to make sure it doesn’t happen again.."

Thoughtful analysis of a misunderstood, tragic event
I appreciate the insight and rare-take on this tragic event. It provides information in a clean, and concise way, with a clear objective of providing accurate, unbiased information on the event. It disputes popular or opinions on the tragedy with facts, and sheds light on important subject matter that helps provide a better understanding of the killers, victims and the timeline of events that day. It also provides a thoughtful review of the general understanding of the events, and provides the actual facts without causing any undo harm to someone who was victimized in this event (in my opinion).

Valuable in that it dispels many of the myths, misconceptions and falsehoods about the Columbine shooting. Everything You Know About Columbine is False
Although there have been many prior school shootings, the Columbine tragedy distinguishes itself by being the first of the "cell phone age" in which the victims were able to broadcast the attack with gunshots and students screaming in terror live to the world as it happened. The horror of the bloody event became real, even larger-than-life as viewers listened to first-hand accounts from trapped students cowering under their desks while the killers roamed the halls. Chaos and confusion reigned hours after the killings had subsided. The police, the parents, and the victims still remained in the dark.
The author, Dave Cullen brings to light the gritty details of an event that has been mythologized, politicized, and obscured by time and possible police corruption. Everything we have come to know or heard about Columbine, from the victims, the killers, and the police, are in fact false. Neither Eric Harris nor Dylan Klebold were members of the "Trenchcoat Mafia", part of Goth culture, nor were they simply hunting jocks. Cullen deftly traverses the maze of evidence leading to the massacre and acutely portrays the following media hysteria. A debate arose in the aftermath of the tragedy whether to regard the killers - Harris and Klebold - as victims too in an event played out when 15 crosses were erected in a monument to the 13 murdered students. There was a darker turn in the cultural aspect as the two killers became martyrs for future copycat school shooters, most notably Seung-Hui Cho who mentioned Harris and Klebold as inspirations in a hate-filled diatribe after murdering over 30 people at Virginia Tech. Nearly two decades have passed since the Columbine school shooting yet the mystery of why it happened still remains prevalent. The Harris's and the Klebold's have maintained their silence on the early lives and behaviors of their children thus contributing to the growing misinformation and myths that have arisen since that sad day at Columbine High School. Overall this book is a must-read for anyone trying to understand this new phenomenon of school massacres and the modern mentality of a school shooter.

BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ/LISTENED TO
Where to start this book was great. In a world of terrible journalism this is a masterpiece. Very well researched and hooked me from the get go. Now, that being said I am a studier of crime psychology and psychology in general. Though this book covers a very sad and terrible event the author does an amazing job at being respectful and stern with the topic at hand. The only way to learn is to understand from all angles. This book was very well written and researched that is obvious. The narrater was also great.

She didn’t say yes
What I liked the most about the book was how it breaks stereotypes such as the “fact” the boys were bullied, how Dylan’s parents were absent or Cassie saying yes.
That being said keep in mind this is not an easy book to read. The author does such a good job depicting the victims and their families that it becomes painful to read at a certain point, which is, at the same time, what makes this book so great and unique. A real life horror story.

I loved this book! which sounds terrible considering it's a book about a school shooting, but Cullen effectively used pathos to make his readers feel sympathy for the deceased and wounded. Must Read!
This is a book that every American should read. Its message is not about gun control, bullying, or even mental illness. Instead, it provides the reader with some insights and even answers into one of the most notorious school shootings in history, including what appears to be a scandalous coverup by the officials in Jefferson county. I personally appreciated the fact that the reporting conducted in this book stressed the fact that the mastermind of the operation, Eric Harris, was in fact a psychopath bent on destruction and notoriety. Understanding this important detail, could be liberating to those individuals who work with children and who live in fear of something like this happening in their school.
