Histoire
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Histoire
When a series of devastating terror attacks brought down the United States, Conor and Barb assumed they were safe in their compound. They had everything they needed. They were armed and highly trained. But then, Barb was kidnapped. The kidnappers didn’t know why Conor was known as The Mad Mick. They didn’t know the fear and respect his name invoked in the shadowy underworld of covert operations. They didn’t know that when it came to protecting his family, he was without conscience, without compassion, and without equal. But they would soon find out.

Histoire
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind—when Freeman’s people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as “Master.” They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war. And lost. Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population.

Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods. It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought. And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. So Udo forms a new plan: clay. After all, clay jars are used to store everything: meat, herbs, and, his personal favorite, ale.

Calling himself Jack Thorn, he chooses an undead race, Deathlord. A mage by choice, and a swordsman by necessity, he soon finds out that he'll need to use much more than magic and steel to survive; strategy, creativity, and carefully chosen words can often accomplish what simple attacks can't.

Lee is a quiet and unassuming office worker who leads a life of solitude, comfort, and routine. Day in and day out, he shuts off his brain, keeps his head down, and goes about doing his job and minding his own business. Description
The philosopher asks: "Faced with the mutually exclusive choice between moral principle and the survival of your family, which is the correct path?"
Philosophers love to pose such questions, and in the day-to-day struggle, such thinkers rarely attain to a level of relevance rivaling that of the simple hunger pang. Their careful considerations dissipate under the leveled gun.
We do not feel their disapproving gaze when The Others draw near.
When the world sends doom, the survivors do not hesitate.
The survivors do what is necessary.

Gayou & Bray are a brilliant team
Gayou/Bray make this an amazing listen. I love the crude profanity written by Josh and orated by Bob. Clay and Gibs are really rich characters. This is an audio book I’ll be able to return to and recommend. I’m so glad I started the series. 5 stars all day.

Surprisingly good
I’ve read a number of books in this category.
Find this author after coming across another of his book titled “ All gifts bestowed “ that I really enjoyed. So I thought I’ll get this one too, especially because you can’t go wrong with the narrator (one of the best)
This series will be my favorite for a while and one that I won’t remove from my device as I wouldn’t mind reading/hearing again. Can’t wait for book 5.

"Hero's" Fight "Villan" with Hypocrisy
The Villan is the last civil man as far as I'm concerned, and the main characters are vipers. At one point they're like "Don't tell him where the guy is, he doesn't have the guts to execute us".
They prey on the civility of the "Villan". They are everything they hate in the world, the Hypocrisy is sad.
Books written fine, and I wonder if the author did this on purpose.

Start to finish...excellent....mostly.
The story was compelling, performance was excellent and thoughtfully written. Start to finish it was riveting. My only complaint was the dialogue of "Clay". Somewhere between Gibbs and Clay lies the line in crude language I don't want to cross. In my opinion the words Clay uses detract from the power of a strong antagonist and reflect on the author. You need a strong tolerance for language most foul if you want to listen to this series.

Went off the road...
Like many other reviewers, I was disappointed with this fourth installment. Several characters made outrageous, unbelievable decisions to advance the plot and what one of main protagonists did in the final quarter of the book was beyond frustrating. It was so irritating that it almost made me give up on the book.
In addition to this major gripe, the author once again continued to have a 9 year old child act and talk like adults and made the lead female protagonist so unlikeable, I was kinda hoping she didn't make it to the end. Finally, the author has a gift when it comes to metaphoring or providing interesting, funny or uncanny descriptions that enable the reader to picture or feel a particular situation. I suspect he's worked really, really hard at this skill over his career, but in this book, it's over done. A full hour or two of the narration could have been cut out of a 22 hour listen, if he had of cut this back even by a quarter. As it was, it was too much and had me fast forward through large parts of the final half of the book. Sometimes there too much of a good thing.
On the positive side, there was a lot of good action and I'm glad the series ended in the way that it did. Others may differ, but the main protagonist was jerk, a tyrant and psychopath and I'm glad a few of the other main characters seemed to rebuff and walk away from him. As anti-heros go, the author made his so unlikeable, I'm glad he didn't get a happy ending.
I recommend if you listened to the first three books, but be prepared to be frustrated.
