Publisher's Summary

In the year 2513, the only thing higher than the seas is what’s at stake for those who sail them.

Rose was born facing due north, with an inherent perception of cardinal points flowing through her veins. Her uncanny sense of direction earns her a coveted job within the Archipelago Fleet, but it also attracts the attention of Admiral Comita, who sends her on a secret mission deep into pirate territory.

Aboard the mercenary ship, Man o' War, Rose joins a ragtag crew under the command of Miranda, a captain as alluring as she is bloodthirsty. Rose quickly learns that trusting the wrong person could get her killed - and Miranda’s crew have no desire to make anything easy for her.

If Rose is going to survive the mission, she’s going to have to learn to navigate more than ruthless pirates, jealous crewmates, swarms of deadly jellyfish, and a host of other underwater perils. Above all, she’s going to need a strategy to resist Miranda’s magnetic pull.

Excellent

Fast paced, dystopian adventure on the high seas. Pirates, blood, gore, krajen, and bad ass broads.

A Favorite

Awesome story, characters, and narration! Like others, I wanted more Miranda. I really hope there's a second and third book with these characters in the works. I miss them already!

Romance kills it.

I'll start with what I liked. I loved the world building, it was a very interesting take on the dystopia sci-fi. the characters were well built and had very distinct voices.
All that only made my struggle all the worse. For one the narrator was.... not bad just not interesting.
Vague spoilers ahead. The romance is what ruined this book for me. In another story they would have had chemistry first then developed an emotional relationship. after that the bombs would have started dropping, causing sudden emotional tension that has to be resolved. This one dropped the bombs before the emotional relationship developed so there was no bases for it to be resolved. the bombs were also completely ignored by the protagonist in favor of her insatiable sexual desire. I got the very real feel that the romantic interest could have been standing there with her mothers head in her hand and the protagonist would have just thought: we need to bang it out before the blood dries.
The disregard for the emotional bomb shells dropping and total focus on the sexual relationship progressing made me suddenly not want to continue listening.

One of my all time favorite books!

I first read Compass Rose a little over a year ago but jumped at the chance to do an audiobook reread ahead of the upcoming 2021 sequel, Sea Wolf! I loved this one just as much a second time, and highly recommend reading it in whatever format you’d prefer!
