Story
David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters, and scientists. He discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

By forcing us to apply a more selective criteria for what is Essential, the disciplined pursuit of less empowers us to reclaim control of our own choices about where to spend our precious time and energy - instead of giving others the implicit permission to choose for us. Essentialism is not one more thing - it’s a whole new way of doing everything. It’s about doing less, but better, in every area of our lives. Essentialism is a movement whose time has come.

Publisher's Summary
For generations, we've been stuck with a cookie-cutter mold for success that requires us to be the same as everyone else, only better. This "standard formula" works for some people but leaves most of us feeling disengaged and frustrated. As much as we might dislike the standard formula, it seems like there's no other practical path to financial security and a fulfilling life. But what if there is?
In the Dark Horse Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, best-selling author and acclaimed thought leader Todd Rose and neuroscientist Ogi Ogas studied women and men who achieved impressive success even though nobody saw them coming. Dark horses blaze their own trail to a life of happiness and prosperity. Yet what is so remarkable is that hidden inside their seemingly one-of-a-kind journeys are practical principles for achieving success that work for anyone, no matter who you are or what you hope to achieve. This mold-breaking approach doesn't depend on you SAT scores, who you know, or how much money you have. The secret is a mind-set that can be expressed in plain English: Harness your individuality in the pursuit of fulfillment to achieve excellence.
In Dark Horse, Rose and Ogas show how the four elements of the dark horse mind-set empower you to consistently make the right choices that fit your unique interests, abilities, and circumstances and will guide you to a life of passion, purpose, and achievement.

Very interesting
This book present some very interesting ideas and fascinating inspirational stories, but I feel that overall the research is biased by selecting only successful people to be its focus.

If you're anything like me, you have to read this
I’ve never felt quite at home in a standardized environment: school, work, etc. I have been able to achieve a certain amount of success, but I never felt whole. Something was always missing. I don’t like this company because of (X) only to join another company that I don’t like because of (Y). Well, what do we know about people who always have bad relationships? After so many bad relationships, you realize the problem isn’t all those other people, it’s you. In truth, the organizations where I’ve worked have all been fine. The problem was me. It wasn’t my path. This book has validated so much of what I’ve felt throughout my life about standardized models of success vs. personal fulfillment. My life changed a few years back, and all of a sudden, the things that I thought were important didn’t seem so important anymore, and new, more authentic things emerged in their place. Since then, I have been following a path that, at times, has caused me to question my sanity. Why can’t I just conform? Why can’t I be content with good enough? I now better understand what it is that I’ve been feeling and why the standard model of achievement has never worked for me. It’s not who I am. For anyone out there who might be looking around your office, your school, or any other standardized system and thinking, “I just don’t belong here,” then this book is for you. I implore you to give it a read because I truly believe that our purpose here in life is to pursue the fullest expression of our individual potential and in doing so, we will realize the fullest expression of humanity as a collective.

I like this idea!
This is a great way to look at the importance of individuality and purpose. I enjoyed the ties with the Declaration of Independence and the pursuit of happiness. Control of populations is changing and governments need to implement a more individually tailored approach to match emerging media and knowledge emerging as part of the Information Age. The social contract discussed here is likely a good starting place.

A must read book!! Maybe not listen though
I truly loved this book, it hit upon everything I was hoping to learn. This way of looking at learning and the world is revolutionary and so needed in our times! I think it should be required reading for all people, I had a true sense of being known and understood reading this book, while also being given a "permission" of sorts to go even deeper into this way of moving through the world. I have to say though, I found the narrator borderline insulting and condescending at his representation of women in this book. At first I thought it was just me, but my business partner who is a man asked me if I felt the same way when we met to discuss. To represent a woman's voice you do not have to sound whiny, wimpy or frail. These are incredibly strong, brilliant women being represented in this book and they deserved better than their audio representation.

Both eye-opening and motivating
The authors skillfully and steadily build their case for personalization over standardization. Then they prove it with examples. The result is this new idea – that makes complete sense – that we can not only improve our flawed system, but that we can improve our own life (i.e. change careers or start a side business, as were inspired to do). We can stop comparing ourselves in a zero-sum world and realize there is room for everyone’s individual talents and skills, including our own, and there is room to bless individual lives and make a living in the process. I loved this book.
