Publisher's Summary

Secrets are like vampires. They captivate us with their forbidden mystery and promises of excitement. Yet once inside us, they become toxic, compelling us to infect others, who in turn want nothing more than to be bitten. It's a vicious cycle that ensures nothing remains secret forever.

The only way to protect yourself from their destructive energies is to simply turn the other way when offered one. To resist the lure of the forbidden fruit. But sometimes, something just happens to you - or you just happen to witness something - that forces one upon you, like an uninvited guest that arrives without warning, and leaves only under great duress.

Unfortunately, I have been burdened by such a secret for over 20 years. You see, my childhood was stolen from me in broad daylight, right under my nose, by a cunning thief who dazzled me with his charms, only to run away with my innocence forever.

It was the perfect crime, and at the time I was the perfect victim. But thankfully, I was able to pick up the pieces of my life and gradually go on to live quite normally. In fact, I even forgot all about my childhood trauma.

Or so I thought. Because it was during a recent chance encounter with my old teenage diary that I realized my demons had never truly left me. They had only been lurking in the shadows all along as I busied myself with other things. I suppose I learned the hard way that a secret kept in darkness only grows in potency.

But there is one way to diffuse a secret. To take away all of its power. And that is to make it public. For no vampire can survive in the cold light of day. So it is at the behest of my wonderfully supportive husband that I have decided to lay bare the ghosts of my childhood in this book, in the hope that in doing so, I'll finally be able to lay them to rest forever. It's been a long, hard journey for me to get to this point. And I thank you, dear listener, for playing your part in my recovery.

Great reminder to ALL parents

What made the experience of listening to Dear Daddy the most enjoyable?

It was written very well. Great first person & the personal library made it so real. Very easy to follow & to believe considering I was a teenage girl myself many, many moons ago. Brought back all those feeling we feel as "wanting to be liked" and realizing how quickly things can go wrong when we don't realize it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Emily herself and her eventual friendship with Jessica.

What does Alice Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She was easy to listen to. Her timing, pauses, just general reading habit was enjoyable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not at all. Just a lot of heartbreak & genuine compassion for all these girls who were taken advantage of.

Any additional comments?

Kudos to Emily's mother for "finding" the diary & taking action. Eye opening to not be TOO trusting with adults exposed to your beloved children & grandchildren.

An Eye Opener!

I appreciated her story. It was an eye opener not to be so trusting with adult males/females w your kids. We as parents, need to be on guard for our kids.

Annoying narration!

While the narrator has a pleasant voice, she pauses for soooo long after each sentence. It is maddening. The story itself is okay, but if you are looking for a deep tale of child abuse, this isn't it.

The title of the book makes sense if you read it.

I took a chance on this one, I don’t listen to many memoirs. I found it interesting from the description, though, and I hadn’t heard or read much about sexual abuse from the perspective of the survivor. The author’s diary (and the rest of the book) provides an up close insider’s view of the ordeal as it happened almost. It really puts the reader in the author’s shoes and how they dealt with the experience before, during and after.

The book was pretty engaging and I didn’t want to stop listening, so I could hear how it turned out. I usually stop and start audiobooks, listening to them in pieces over the course of months, but not this one! I really thought I knew how it would play out, but ended up being wrong, so it was more surprising than i thought it would be. It’s also not very long (it’s as long as it needs to be) so I didn’t feel like I needed to jump ship in the middle.

why no British narration

I'm sorry I read this book and liked it. so when I saw that it was available on audible I had to buy it. I was very disappointed that that narration wasn't British that really took away from the story. I don't think I will be listening to it on audible I will just read it the next time. because while the narrator was good she didn't fit this book

Ok book-title is kind of

Odd....the way it's written is also a little strange. I mean, I didn't hate it but I didn't love it.
