Histoire
It’s graduation day for sixteen-year-old Malencia Vale, and the entire Five Lakes Colony (the former Great Lakes) is celebrating. All Cia can think about—hope for—is whether she’ll be chosen for The Testing, a United Commonwealth program that selects the best and brightest new graduates to become possible leaders of the slowly revitalizing post-war civilization.

Description
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are - and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves.... or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series - dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Not worth the time.
Every character seems to be these petty miserable people who constantly misunderstand everything they say to each other. Maybe I'm too old for this, but it feels like the entire book is written for junior high kids who are emotionally stunted and constantly angry at each other. The main relationship has zero depth; the ONLY time they get along being when they're making out.
Honestly, this one's not worth the time it takes to read it.

Second tier YA Sci Fi Dystopia
The premise for this novel is really cool: “the five factions.” However, the author doesn’t do much with the premise. Candor, and Amity are completely ignored. And for some reason the pacifist Abnegation faction is put solely in charge of this society, and both the Erudite and Dauntless factions agreed with this system of government? It doesn’t make any sense.
Rather than being FOR young adults, this book feels like it was written by a young adult. The plot is basic, there’s no big surprises or TWISTS. The bad guys are bad just for the sake of being bad. None of the characters have back stories to support their characters. The love interest doesn’t seem special to the main character, he’s just sort of available.
There’s also some tremendous violence,
especially near the end, and because the plot is so thin, it’s just shocking but not a satisfying “justified” type of violence. I can’t believe kids read this in school, instead of better quality books.

Disappointed..
..even with lowered expectations.
I confess that I've never seen the film treatment and downloaded this title because - despite some truly annoying genre conventions - I actually enjoy YA Fantasy-SciFi. I realistically wasn't expecting high quality, but regardless this effort fell incredibly flat.
The book starts by establishing an intriguing matrix: a hypothetical future Chicago with divisions of society into five "factions" - each focussing on a specific "virtue" (intelligence, bravery, selflessness, etc.), each providing for a societal role, and each competing for predominance. 16 year-olds are made to select a faction and undergo training designed to reinforce the specific virtue with which they identify the most - so that they can provide that role in their community as adults.. it's ingenius, thought-provoking, and lays the groundwork for some fascinating potential plot evolutions.
Unfortunately, Veronica Roth instead chooses to beat her readers over the head with themes of non-conformity/independence, bullying and friendship, and confused romantic feelings. The writing is actually pretty capable (acceptable vocabulary/prose, well-plotted, well-described), but the blatant targeting of angtsy teen insecurities is too-often eyerolling.
Fortunately, a genuine strength of this recording is the performance. Emma Galvin reads with creditable diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting - but with an unusually admirable emotive tone. Her portrayal of 'Tris' is *excellent*.
The narration is by no means flawless (Galvin reads too slowly, for example) but the production quality doubtless improves the enjoyability of the story.
I rate 'Divergent' 5.5 stars out of 10. If you're really into the YA Dystopian genre ('Hunger Games', 'Maze Runner', etc.), it's a reasonable selection - but don't expect to be blown away.
[Please Note: The political plotline & resolution is melodramatic and straight-up stoopid]

Absolutely riveting.
Great narration, story captures the mind and inspires the imagination. An adventurous story based around a strong female lead. It's absolutely fantastic and inspiring for young teen aged women, looking for a story about a bad ass female overcoming obstacles to become a true leader. A hard book to put down, engrossing from start to finish.
