Publisher's Summary

BuzzFeed Greatest Fantasy Book of the Year author

In his magnificent, heroic adventure fantasy, Dragonslayer, Duncan M. Hamilton debuts the first audiobook in a fast-moving trilogy: a dangerous tale of lost magics, unlikely heroes, and reawakened dragons.

Once a member of the king's personal guard, Guillot dal Villevauvais spends most days drinking and mourning his wife and child. He’s astonished - and wary - when the Prince Bishop orders him to find and destroy a dragon. He and the Prince Bishop have never exactly been friends, and Gill left the capital in disgrace five years ago. So why him? And, more importantly, how is there a dragon to fight when the beasts were hunted to extinction centuries ago by the ancient Chevaliers of the Silver Circle?

On the way to the capitol city, Gill rescues Solène, a young barmaid, who is about to be burned as a witch. He believes her innocent...but she soon proves that she has plenty of raw, untrained power, a problem in this land, where magic is forbidden. Yet the Prince Bishop believes magic will be the key to both destroying the dragon and replacing the young, untried king he pretends to serve with a more pliable figurehead.

Between Gill’s rusty swordsmanship and Solene’s unstable magic, what could go wrong?

I didn't expect to love it this much

I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone into fantasy or dragons. I usually don't enjoy books where the dragon is the bad guy, but honestly, Hamilton pulls it of PHENOMENALLY. He allows the reader to understand WHY the dragon is burning villages and killing people; he gives him character, and I love that. In addition, every character is well formulated and has a detailed backstory that allows you to understand them in a deeper way. I went out of my comfort zone a little for this one, and I made a great choice. This book is VERY well written. The only reason I have performance four stars is because some names were hard to understand, especially at first, and I didn't enjoy the voice he used when reading dialogue the main villain. However, he did a great job at making sure you knew who was talking and when and was consistent with recognizable voices for each character.

A Good listen, with a dragon, and some magic.

It has some undertones about the main character's flaws. He has let himself go and drinks to much, but he manages to beat his demons in the end. A little predictable, but I am looking forward to the 2nd book in the series.

Absolutely Brilliant !!!!

Literally the best narration I have ever listened to. Simon Vance did a fantastic job bringing Hamilton’s book to life. The voice changes were impeccable! I could tell who was talking every time. I fell in love with the characters and this beautifully layered story. If you are looking for a listen that will take you on an amazing adventure with magic, dragons, and a charmingly reluctant knight. Please do try this gem, you won’t regret it!

A glass of wster

I can’t figure out the world that this story is trying to build. There are kings, dragons but the also mention Austria and “glass of water”. The author mentions a “wicked”scar, which strikes me as a poor choice of words. Like so much of this book, you can’t get a grip on the sense of time and place. I’m going to stop reading/listening before I just get annoyed.

Not sure why? So so

So I should preface that I am writing a series of reviews to reduce the unfinished books in my collection.

This book is well written but it just didn’t hold my attention. I may go back and give it another try , but after several starts/stops I am giving up here.

wolf of the north may still be best but....

Duncan M. Hamilton should not continue any association with British law. He should only write books. Yes, yes selfish but if you read or hear his work you will nod in selfish agreement.
