Histoire
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Histoire
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. Description
Number-one New York Times best-seller and the perfect holiday gift.
A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
"Beautifully written and incredibly funny, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is about the importance of friendship and human connection. I fell in love with Eleanor, an eccentric and regimented loner whose life beautifully unfolds after a chance encounter with a stranger; I think you will fall in love, too!" (Reese Witherspoon)
No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.
Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.
But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.
Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .
The only way to survive is to open your heart.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"Move over, Ove (in Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove) - there's a new curmudgeon to love." (Booklist)
"Eleanor Oliphant is a truly original literary creation: funny, touching, and unpredictable. Her journey out of dark shadows is absolutely gripping." (Jojo Moyes, New York Times best-selling author of Me Before You)
"Narrator Cathleen McCarron's articulated British accent and studied pacing lend weight to Eleanor's apparent alienation from the world - and her immediate charm to listeners.... While supporting characters are well defined with distinct voices and accents, McCarron especially shines in setting the story's emotional tone." (AudioFile)

I think we all know an Eleanor Oliphant
This was a surprisingly good read! I was able to connect well with Eleanor and all the characters. I loved that the author was able to reverse Eleanor's awkward ways into thinking everyone else was peculiar, not her.
There were laugh out loud moments, awkward moments, compassionate moments, despairing moments, and if you are from the UK, an appreciation for the softly spoken Scottish dialect, and familiar terms.
I feel that the author's choice of making us aware of loneliness is important. I believe we all know an Eleanor Oliphant, someone who claims they are just fine, but lives an isolated life, who is a little different, but longs for acceptance, and love.
I would heartily recommend this book. I look forward to more from Gail Honeyman.

Beautiful story on human connections
We forget very easily how very basic human connections we have with other people around us like talking and touching are crucial to our sanity and necessary for our survival.
I loved how we got to know Eleanor, piece by piece, somewhat OK on the surface while trying to deny her horrendous past. A survival technique she used so that she could function, which at some point was not anymore successful.
While listening to this, I had to laugh loud several times especially when she was experiencing something trivial for the first time, like ordering a drink, and wanted to look normal and experienced. She reminded me of myself!
The performance and narration was great too! Gave the great story an edge.

Very Enjoyable
I found the characters realistic and endearing. I was drawn into the story and was able to follow along without confusion or distraction. It was fun and had a little bit of everything.
I enjoyed the story and thought the narration was exceptional.
I find with an audio book that even if the story is well written and the plot is great if the narration is bad it ruins the whole thing. Happily this is not a problem here. Even when doing different voices for the various characters Cathleen McCarron pulls it off.

I didn’t think I’d like this book at the beginning. It almost seemed “silly”!
