Publisher's Summary

The fate of the world is in the hands of a father and daughter in an epic novel of wonder and terror by Dean Koontz, the number one New York Times best-selling master of suspense.

Since his wife, Michelle, left seven years ago, Jeffy Coltrane has worked to maintain a normal life for himself and his 11-year-old daughter, Amity, in Suavidad Beach. It’s a quiet life, until a local eccentric known as Spooky Ed shows up on their doorstep.

Ed entrusts Jeffy with hiding a strange and dangerous object - something he calls “the key to everything” - and tells Jeffy that he must never use the device. But after a visit from a group of ominous men, Jeffy and Amity find themselves accidentally activating the key and discovering an extraordinary truth. The device allows them to jump between parallel planes at once familiar and bizarre, wondrous and terrifying. And Jeffy and Amity can’t help but wonder, could Michelle be just a click away?

Jeffy and Amity aren’t the only ones interested in the device. A man with a dark purpose is in pursuit, determined to use its grand potential for profound evil. Unless Amity and Jeffy can outwit him, the place they call home may never be safe again.

Includes an audio-only short story, "Parlor Trick," a kind of karmic coda to the novel.

What the critics say

“Ballerini (a Koontz veteran) is tremendous, and Parks makes strong choices in diction, pronunciation, and pacing to bring Amity Coltrane to life. The collaborative effect of Ballerini and Parks' narration works as a deliberate “all-in” to the production, making the audio version even more of a standout.”—Booklist

“Colorful, imaginative…a lively, offbeat novel.” —Kirkus Reviews

“This is a genre-busting work that happily will appeal to readers who enjoy thrillers, horror, sci-fi or just a flat-out well-told story with a breakneck pace that never lets up.” —Bookreporter

wow what a journey

This was such a great book. full of action. I normally only do longer books. however, this is great. The voices weren't bad either. I listen at 1.5x though.

Story is butchered by the female narrator

The reading style of the female narrator made this very difficult for me to get through the whole book!

Dean Koontz is one of my favourites

I love it when he shows his softer side. He really does imagine all possibilities and makes us follow along with his visions.

Great story!!

I found Imani Park’s reading a little stilted - not a natural flow (sorry Imani), but otherwise loved it

don't miss this story due to narration!

If this is your first Dean Koontz novel , you're lucky , because he has a library of stories from which to choose. This is not a typical cookie cutter author, his stories are diverse and his use of lyrical prose woven through take his readers to magical places, this story is no exception. Enjoy the journey :)

Oh Boy

I really enjoy Dean Koontz and this story was great. The male narrator did a fabulous job. However, the female narrator was very difficult to listen to and basically ruined the novel. She does not seem to understand punctuation. I will not listen to another book that lists her as a narrator. I do look forward to another in this series though!

Horrible Narration.

The male parts were fine but the female parts were horrible. Poor pronunciation, awkward pauses, and general lack of emotion pulled me out of the story countless times. The story was interesting but I doubt I will listen again.

interesting and suspenseful

Fun and somewhat frustrating to see folks doing exactly the wrong things at the worst times, the tale ends much quicker than wished. It would have been nice to explore a few more elsewheres.

t's'ok

I had read reviens about the young woman reader so I was prepared and it didn't make me want to stop listening... she does have very bad timing for pauses, it's unpleasant but didn't ruin the story.
the story itself is a great premise, but the need for the author to have the characters make stupid decisions in order for the story to move forward is a bit disappointing. anyway, all in all not a bad listen.

Fun and Quick

This was a fun and quick read. action starts right away and doesn't let up until the end, in true Koontz fashion.
A father and daughter discover parallel worlds and try to escape the deep state agents that want that tech.
