Publisher's Summary

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club YA Pick

Filled with all of the action, emotion, and lyrical writing that brought audiences to Sky in the Deep, New York Times best-selling author Adrienne Young returns with Fable, the first audiobook in this new captivating duology.

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home 17-year-old Fable has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day, her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food.

To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one, and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father, and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so, Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him, and Fable soon finds that West isn't who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they're going to stay alive.

Fable takes you on a spectacular journey filled with romance, intrigue, and adventure.

Absolutely hooked

I could not stop listening to this book! From the second I got it to the very last second I was entranced by the story and the reader. She did an amazing job at voicing her feeling through the words 10/10

Didn't know what to expect, but loved it!

I picked up Fable because I had read Adrienne Young's other books and fell in love with her writing, but when I started Fable, I was a bit perplexed: the theme and worldbuilding wasn't really what I usually am attracted to. In the end that didn't matter. As always, Adrienne's worldbuilding is prestine, her characters complexe and endearing and the tension just enough to keep everything interesting. The voice acting was also phenomenal, so really no regrets! Can't wait to get started on the Sequel :)

A relaxing read

Was pretty good, a little predictable but written well. It was fairly simple to listen to not much thought or need to pay close attention to the characters or plot. It was fun slowly being fed details what the why behind things even if the love interest didn’t sit right. I ship them but not completely comfortable with it

Decent story, overly dramatized

This book is well written and the story was interesting enough, although the level of hype around it had me expecting more. Whether it was the writing or the way the narrator chose to express it, the whole thing felt overly dramatic for the stakes of what was happening. There's some interesting family drama, and a tough "survival first" setting, but there's very little fantasy elements and not that much at stake.
Good characters helped, but the underdeveloped romance felt thrown in.

Just an outline of a story, characters thin

The premise didn't make sense. A girl getting dumped on a island with an incentive if you can make it out I'll give you something, though I won't tell you what, till you make it. Honestly this was more like an outline of a story. There was no depth to the characters and relationships felt unnatural and thin. To me it seemed like the bones of a book I've read before.

The plot was literally non existent or maybe it was there but I just didn't care. The worst was Fable's inner thoughts which were utterly repeative. 'Nothing comes free.' 'Don't show who you care about.' I would say this was all predictable but nothing happened although that could still be predicted. Fable was a gem sage. I can't spoil this and tell you about it because I don't know myself. Was there other magics? Was this even magic? Don't know that either. Not that I recall anything of importance ever being explained here.

For some reason Iv gotten in a groove were space operas and pirate books excite me. So when Fable was diving and describing her surroundings I was in bliss, then for the rest of the book I wasn't. With a barely there plot and thin characters, nothing gripped me. Also while reading I had the distinct impression that I was waiting for something.......the entire time. A shocking twist, maybe even a plot. I trudged on waiting but nothing came. This truly could have been a standalone except for the cliffhanger. Another sad thing was the map was so sparse. Even though this takes place in the sea not much of it is explored. If it's not obvious I won't be continuing.

lackluster

Beautiful world building.
Beautiful detailing but.....the story itself? I expected more.

I'm just kind of not impressed. Especially with how much hype I was hearing about this book. There is like one and a half action scenes. The flash backs were more interesting than the main character.

BUT with the final word in this book she got my interest, because now I need to know how.

Ugh

I read the reviews and I have read popular YA in the past, I purchased the book. The reader was just blah, making it hard to connect with the story. The one word that comes to mind is Dreary. The story, performance and overall lifeless.

Disappointed

I can’t quite put my finger on why I wasn’t entertained. I was so hopeful for a YA that would add some lightness to my library. This was not the one.

Good story, ok narrator

I liked the story of Fable a lot, a YA fantasy set on the sea. Lysy did a fine job as the narrator, but I felt like she could have used a bit more emotion. However, I still enjoyed listening and thought the story was very cool.

I can't wait for Namesake!

Literally loved this book so much, super happy to read this after "sky in the deep" and it's following subsequent book. Love this author. She's just builds an amazing world and believable characters and it's just an entertaining ride the whole time. I can't wait to listen to/read namesake next

Leaves you wanting more

I did NOT realize this was the first in a series. I enjoyed the book completely and the writer does an amazing job pulling you into that world.... however, it’s left on a major cliff hanger which makes me crazy. I like a book to be a bit more complete.
