Excellent introduction to the series

If you’re planning on reading any books in the series the first five books are essential reading. Luckily they are all quite good, though this introduction does stand above the others. Really gives a good sense of the difference between the humans and Astartes. Does a great job developing Loken as a character and builds suspense for what is to come. If you have any interest in the deeper 40k mythology you could do worse than starting here.

RISE OF THE RENEGADE WARMASTER

#Audible1 This is the second book in the Horus Heresy saga and is the story of the Warmaster's ascent to treasons leadership of the rebellion against his father, the Emperor of Mankind. Picking up from where Dan Abnett left off, Graham McNeill does a good job of continuing the story, adding to it his own particular flavor of wording and storytelling. His ability to portray the now corrupted side of the legion is excellent however I found the jump between the once fanatically loyal marines in book 1 to the openly hostile and treasonous forces tainted by chaos to be somewhat jarring in the suddenness. This may simply be my own personal feelings for the change in author between the two books but do not let it dissuade you from listening. Toby Longworth is one of my favorite narrators for the Horus Heresy Series and does an excellent job giving each pertinent moment the dramatic flair it deserves.

Excellent!

Even though I knew the story would take this turn. I held out genuine hope that all could be made well. The twists and turns were powerful. A great follow up to a previous and equally great book in this long running series!

Excellent Work.

The voices are spot on, the narrator has the perfect voice for what Astartes should sound like imo.

Excellent work and performance. I wish he read the entire series.

As good as the first book

On the side of the story or on the side of the voice acting, as it was in the first book, perfect !

Frustrating Characters

I enjoyed this book. However the space marines leave something to be desired. Many of them read like angsty teenagers with poor anger control. The story arc of them turning traitor reminds me of the 1981 movie ‘the wave’. I find it hard to believe that 200+ year old super soldiers would be so easily susceptible to tactics used to radicalize children. Hence why I find them frustrating.

An Entertaining but flawed version

The events of the Horus Heresy are legendary among die hard Warhammer 40k enthusiasts. I feel like reading this tale in these books is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it's awesome to have the story told definitively in one place rather than pieced together from dozens of snippets over many books spread out over decades. On the other hand, it could never hope to live up to the legend we all built up in our heads and told eachother over long games of Warhammer.

YES!

Amazing story. I can't help but sympathize with Loken. I will listen to this a few times in the coming months.

The beginning of the end

False Gods picks up exactly where they left off in Horus Rising.
Despite knowing exactly how things would play out I still found myself hoping for a better outcome.
I feel like the Voice acting goes a step further in this novel as there are more characters and the narrator does a great job of making them feel distinct from one and other.
