Publisher's Summary

"A key to the audiobook’s success for fans is its all-star cast — a strong advantage here for audio over print. When a “Next Generation” cast member speaks in 'Fan Fiction,' from Patrick Stewart to Marina Sirtis, it’s that actor’s actual voice you’re hearing." - The Providence Journal

This program is read by the author with LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Genie Francis, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Patrick Stewart, and a full cast.

Brent Spiner’s explosive and hilarious novel is a personal look at the slightly askew relationship between a celebrity and his fans. If the Coen Brothers were to make a Star Trek movie, involving the complexity of fan obsession and sci-fi, this noir comedy might just be the one.

Set in 1991, just as Star Trek: The Next Generation has rocketed the cast to global fame, the young and impressionable actor Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, that take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that enlists Paramount Security, the LAPD, and even the FBI in putting a stop to the danger that has his life and career hanging in the balance.

Featuring a cast of characters from Patrick Stewart to LeVar Burton to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, to some completely imagined, this is the fictional autobiography that takes listeners into the life of Brent Spiner, and tells an amazing tale about the trappings of celebrity and the fear he has carried with him his entire life.

Fan Fiction is a zany love letter to a world in which we all participate, the phenomenon of “Fandom.”

What the critics say

"Incredible production values (one of the best soundscapes I’ve ever heard, honestly) and some interesting insights from Spiner..." —Locus

"[A] diverting memoir-mystery hybrid...Spiner’s debut is an homage to fans: where would celebrities be without them?" —Publishers Weekly

"Like the man himself, this book is funny, sharp, and brilliant. You’re going to love it, and Brent, even if you’ve never heard of “Star Trek”. It’s one of the most entertaining books ever written about entertainment." —Phil Rosenthal (creator, writer, producer), creator of Everybody Loves Raymond and star of Somebody Feed Phil

Delightful

A delightful (mostly) true-ish story. The audio format is the best way to enjoy this book by far.

I became a fan

Yes, I was a fan of Data and Brent Spiner but haven't been in that world for a long time. I heard him on a podcast recently and heard Brent had a book and that a lot of his friends joined him for the Audible version. This was a great mix of reality and fiction. It was a fun ride that I will go on again.

The BEST audiobook of this year!!

I've listened to this three times now. I'm a huge Trek fan, so I was already going to purchase it because it is written by Brent Spiner, but when I saw the cast list my Trekkie heart almost had a meltdown of happiness!! And it does not disappoint. The story is fun, and very entertaining, and the narration by Brent is fabulous on it's own, and then when you add in the rest of the cast it takes off to an entirely different place... Some might even say where no man has gone before... 🖖

Hilarious

I was laughing all the way through. Brent is delightfully self-deprecating. It’s hard to tell where truth meets fiction.

A triumph for synthetic life

Commander Data astounds yet again with a tour-de-force analysis of the human condition. In this exciting fictional tale that gives Inception a conceptual run for its money, Data pretends to be a neurotic human actor, who in turn pretends to be Data for a living. His performance is so remarkable, you simply wouldn't know he's an android, if you weren't listening closely. For this production, he somehow managed to convince the senior bridge crew to play the parts of his fellow actors, which was quite a treat; it's always nice to hear the voices of Picard, Riker, and the rest of the crew. If this were an episode of the Next Generation, it would be my second favorite, next to The Offspring. I love you, Data.

A TNG nerd's delight!

This was a super fun take of the genre of fan fiction. It's corny, hilarious and full of references to the early days of TNG. You get a unique look into the back-stage, maybe fictional (?), lives of some of the TNG actors and Brent Spiner is a delightful narrator.
