Publisher's Summary

In Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow Series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.

Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words...And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? Open her heart to someone? Or will she just go on living inside somebody else's fiction?

A love letter to the Tumblr die-hards

If you've lived in any world of fandom, this book will strike a chord.

So much of this book is a homage to Harry Potter and the franchise's passionate fanbase. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell legitimizes the love of fabrication by making it real and heart wrenching. Those who grew up alongside Tumblr and Fanfiction.net will fall head-over-heels for Cath and Levy, Simon and Baz. A page turner and a sweet romance.

Listened maybe 5 times so far

I keep coming back to this book. I've listened to it at least 4 times and I've read it at least as many times. Rebecca Lowman is a gifted voice actor. Her male voices don't jolt me out of the story, which is rare for me. I wish Rainbow Rowell had more titles for me to mop to, do the dishes to, ride out migraines in cave darkness to, etc.

Excellent! except for...

After reading Eleanor and Park, I was eager to read Fangirl, and it was such a good book. I really loved the characters and the connections between Regan and Levi. However I hated the snippets of the Simon Snow parts. I found it took away from Cath's story a bit. I liked her fanfiction snippets but not GTL's. Just my opinion, the book could have done without. However, it's still a great novel. I wish Rainbow Rowell would write more YA novels.

❤️

You know those books that you love so much you want everyone to read it, and yet you don’t want anyone else to read it because if they didn’t enjoy it you would be hurt? This is one of those books for me.

I love Rainbow Rowell’s writing, and here she is at her best. The characters leap off the page and the narrator is absolutely the perfect choice. I could not listen fast enough, and at the same time I was sad to find myself at the end.

Obviously, it is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. It is a story about (among other things) a girl who writes slash fan fiction about a Harry Potter-like universe. If you don’t like awesome things, I guess you might not be a fan.

However, if you read the synopsis and feel like you might like it, do yourself a favour and pick it up. You won’t be sorry!

Fun and thoughtful read

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. I felt for all the characters, and their problems and experience felt so real and sometimes painful. Rowell does a great job of writing about family and growing up, and how difficult both those things can be, while ultimately being rewarding. Thoroughly enjoyed this read. #Audible1

If Mary Sue were an introvert

A protagonist so closed to experience has little hope of driving an interesting story, and sadly this instance fails.
