About this listen

C.S. Friedman, acclaimed author of The Coldfire Trilogy, returns to the epic style which has made her one of the most popular fantasy writers in the genre. In this first book of the trilogy, Friedman introduces listeners to a world of high fantasy, replete with vampire-like magical powers, erotic interludes, treachery, war, sorcery, and a draconic creature of horrific power and evil that will have listeners eagerly awaiting the next novel in the series.

The premise of the book is an interesting take on an alternative to vampiric powers. the theme is people can use magic but it drains their life, a certain group is able to use it while draining others. Alot could be done with this but the book just becomes rather boring. the main character gains this ability early in the book but the motivation never seems to make believable sense. she takes a trial with a high risk of death, just so she can use magic without dying? the person that teaches her takes so little to convince - literally her saying if you don't teach me, I'll stay outside your house until you do and that's enough for him to teach her this dark and mysterious ability? then the moment she gains it, after exclaiming she doesn't care about the cost, she immediately starts caring about the cost. The whole thing gets tiring to listen to as you start picking up on obvious inconsistencies - I couldn't finish it. Pity, it could have been Soo much more.

Decent narration, interesting world, poorly paced and written
