A bit disappointing

A sideline origin story that was predictable in its conflict and resolution. I like the Firefly universe but this story did not engage me.

Great continuation of a beloved series

The narrator did an excellent job of emulating the cadences of the original characters. A+ voice acting work! It made it easy to slip into the world again and envision the story playing out as though watching the show again. The author captured each character’s personality very well. The only thing I’m sad about is that this wasn’t an actual episode I could have watched and enjoyed. 10/10

Better then expected

Keeping in line with the characters personalities this book was pretty good all things considered. Yes the narrator needed to learn the proper pronunciation of Chinese words and because of the story you don't get quite as much of the fun Malcolm charm and interactions between everyone but all in all very fun and makes you want to lose yourself in the Firefly world again.

Satisfying if by the numbers

As a die hard Firefly fan, I was excited to discover this book. The tone and pace are spot on, compatible with what I imagine a two part season finale might have looked like. It’s not as epic or consequential as the movie or some episodes of the show, but it fits nicely as a lost a couple of episodes of the show. I will read the next book for sure. I wasn’t as big a fan of the narration, though I suppose it wasn’t bad, just limited by budget. Those voices are so specific it’s tough to get the cadence and read all the tongue and cheek lines correctly. I’d call it decent, though it’s where I’d most want to see improvement.

An excellent continuation

I loved this show and have rewatched it plenty. These books are not a disappointment. They are excellent “episodes”. Narrator does a fantastic job with each character. If you loved the show you’ll love everyone of these books!

Good story continuation from the show

Good addition to the universe. There were a few parts that reference the show too much with a “hey remember this” feel to it, which felt to me like a waste of time and writing. But I did enjoy it and it had me invested into the story.

I listened to it at 0.8 speed which helped me hear the ever so slight voice differences the narrator gave to the characters. He did do a good job at bringing the original feel of the main characters back though.

Decent

Decent story. The first few chapters included a lot of references to the show that felt more like "hey, remember this?" moments rather than pieces of info that furthered this new story. Felt like the pacing dragged a bit occasionally but otherwise I enjoyed another peek into the lives of Serenity's crew, especially the Shepherd Book bits.
