Publisher's Summary

Carin Douglas is a fearless young girl, thrust into the role of a stickup kid alongside Brooklyn's most notorious thugs. She learns to fight, to survive, and, ultimately, to shine through a series of events that take her from a young girl on the verge to a designer-clad diva with a hot car, an even hotter man, and a million deadly skeletons in her closet.

When Carin meets Monty, aka "Money Monty", he sweeps her off her feet with one romantic gesture after another. Monty is a sexy, powerful man with that legendary Brooklyn swagger and more money than most of his peers in the street. Their urban fairytale soon erupts into passionate sex, bold power moves, and, eventually, devastating physical violence between them. When things get explosive, Carin is reminded of the love she knows Monty feels for her and the lavish lifestyle he's showered her with. But will that be enough to save them?

Carin and Monty's love comes full circle in this epic story of love, loss, pain, and forgiveness. In Ayana Ellis' second novel, she raises the bar, exposes some ugly truths, and shines a spotlight on the painful reality of domestic abuse. All that glitters isn't gold in this new novel that is sure to have listeners talking for years to come.

SO EMOTIONAL! SO REAL! SO HEARTBREAKING! AMAZING!

How do I know this book is good? It made you yell, get angry, cry so hard, wants to throw your phone and smile. This book brought me through every emotion known. SO incredibly well written as it truly captures domestic abuse and the trauma that people face growing up in the hood. Not only that but it explores how some relationships are just so complicated. Sometimes people hurt you beyond anything but your love never dies. This was such an amazing book and definitely on my favourites list.

A trainwreck of Dumb and Dumber (spoiler)

The first 8 chapters were a book within themselves; a book that had so much disfunction and drama for a 15-17 year old girl that was just too many things. The rest of this book dragged out far too long. This seemingly "tough girl" is now this battered victim, invoking her strength at the oddest times, like fighting other women over him- but won't fight him, and also choosing (actually making the conscience choice) over and over to be a victim. Same thing, different day, claiming she can't stand the sight of him, but then is "too in love" to leave. It was one bad decision after another. And the abusers family, who who literally lives in the same building - but never intervenes. Then her family, specifically her father is so tough that he has "goons" yet no one ever approaches this abuser? This level of self inflicted drama and abuse is thankfully so far removed from me that this book was just too unrealistic for me. I do not know anyone who would be this dumb. Repeatedly choosing to stay or go back after she successfully left to that amount of abuse- when she had several ways out. The end was the illusion of "happy", so I guess that was a good thing and it held my attention because I was waiting for real redemption. Sadly, none really came. Listen at your own risk.

Kept me constantly on edge!!

This is normally not the type of book I read. At first, I was going to request a refund. However, the first chapter had me hooked. This story brought out emotions that had me all over the place. I truly loved this book!! So many life lessons contained in it. Well done!

Life of Karin

The book was truly full circle. I enjoyed how the book started off as a teenager and the book took Karin to adulthood. I was so happy for Karin, when enough was enough. Once Nina came into her life, her life took a turn for the best. Excellent book.

No one is this dumb!

I almost quit listening to this book so many times because I kept thinking that this has to be the dumbest b*tch in the world. There ain't that much love in the world to continually allow yourself to be brutalized, especially when you have options. This book is 10 hours long on Audible, and I swear 8 of those hours were spent detailing the main character's abuse. Too drawn out. The author could've spent some time following up with the mother. Nicole Small as narrator was brilliant per usual. The selfless young boy who was there for the main character from the first chapter just dropped out of sight, never to return. I really thought the title meant that they would see each other again to give us all closure! Nope. The book is good, but as an avid reader big discrepancies stand out to me. Also, how does Monty spend extravagantly for years after being awarded only 1 million dollars? I mean, EXTRAVAGANTLY!

Man I wanted to beat some sense into Caren

This book had me so emotional. she mad so many mistakes and sometimes I could not see her learning from them. I can not understand what the deal was with her mom. this was a good book. a few times I said I cant continue to read this trainwreck but I pushed through and it was a better ending than I thought!
