Publisher's Summary

The idea that you could be more but got in your own way should wake you up in the middle of the night. Dave Hollis used to think that “personal growth” was just for broken people, then he woke up.

When a looming career funk, a growing drinking problem, and a challenging trek through therapy battered Dave Hollis, a Disney executive and father of four, he began to realize he was letting untruths about himself dictate his life. As he sank to the bottom of his valley, he had to make a choice. Would he push himself out of his comfort zone to become the best man he was capable of being, or would he play it safe and settle for mediocrity?

In Get Out of Your Own Way, Dave tackles topics he once found it difficult to be honest about, things like his struggles with alcohol and his insecurities about being a dad.

Offering encouragement, challenges, and a hundred moments to laugh, Dave will help you:

  • Discover the way for those of us who are, like he was, skeptical of self-help but wanting something more than the status quo
  • Drop negative ideas about who we are supposed to be and finally start living as who we really are
  • See our own journeys more clearly as he unpacks the lies he once believed—such as “I Have to Have It All Together” and “Failure Means You’re Weak”
  • Learn the tools that helped him change his life, and may change your life too

Get Out of Your Own Way is a call to arms for anyone who’s interested in a more fulfilled life, who, along the way, may have lost their “why” and now wonders how to unlock their potential or be better for their loved ones.

Lots of hot air

Dave has been a Disney Executive and left the job
for unknown reasons and writes a book full of wage life examples with no real insight and just listening generic life lessons and a lots of boring nonsense. A true waste of money and and time.

read this over and over again

It was such an easy listen. I 100% related to multiple parts of the book. The added bonus interview with Rachel at the end was a delight! I love how she questioned about masculinity, hopefully between her and Dave they can break some stigma about males being vulnerable.

It feels contrived

I want to love it. I don't. It feels like a product designed to sell books and product rather than a story worth remembering. Hard to say exactly why... but the there is a lack of genuineness to it which is hard to digest.

This book is for everyone even my 81 year old dad is reading it!

I am fortunate enough to have received an advanced reader copy of Get Out Of Your Own Way from the publisher after being apart of Girl Stop Apologizing Launch Team, and I have preordered on Audible as well I am reading the first half of the book, it’s an easy read and even though it’s written from a male perspective, personal development is for everyone and all genders can identify with Dave’s story, since I’ve started reading the book, I have decided to sign up for an upcoming Emotion Focused Family Therapy series of workshops, excited to see where this leads because I need change! Everyday I am taking baby steps to getting out of my own way!

If you’re struggling in life, get this book!

Do you believe in divine timing? I do. After reading Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis in 2018 I decided to quit drinking for a year. I did it because of the chapter on personal integrity. This book, Get Out of Your Own Way comes into my life at the perfect time again. I’m in my own way. I’m prioritizing unimportant crap. Thank you, Dave for putting it all out there. It’s like a gentle kick in the ass to do what I know I need to do and to stop doing the crap that’s holding me back.

I’d recommend this book to anyone struggling in life. It’s a reminder that you have the power to get out of your own way! Buy the book, you won’t regret it!
