Publisher's Summary

New York Times best seller.

They all thought he was gone. But he was alive and trapped inside his own body for ten years.

In January 1988 Martin Pistorius, aged 12, fell inexplicably sick. First, he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doctors were mystified. Within 18 months, he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Martin's parents were told an unknown degenerative disease left him with the mind of a baby and less than two years to live.

Martin was moved to care centers for severely disabled children. The stress and heartache shook his parents’ marriage and their family to the core. Their boy was gone. Or so they thought.

Ghost Boy is the heart-wrenching story of one boy’s return to life through the power of love and faith. In this audiobook, listeners will learn of:

  • A parent’s resilience
  • The consequences of misdiagnosis
  • Abuse at the hands of cruel caretakers
  • The unthinkable duration of Martin’s mental alertness betrayed by his lifeless body

We also see a life reclaimed — a business created, a new love kindled — all from a wheelchair.

Martin's emergence from his own darkness invites us to celebrate our own lives and fight for a better life for others.

I can relate...

I can relate...not being able to talk / communicate for two years.

What is the purpose of communicating if no one listens?

Amazing, powerful, and thought-provoking

I felt sad, happy, and liberated by Martin’s story. This would be a motivating story for anyone! The abuse in the care homes he received horrified me. On the other hand the human kindness and love from his family and strangers was moving and wonderful. A powerful read.

Must read

I'd call this a must read book. I don't think I'll take as many things for granted anymore! The way he describes his daily struggles and his fight to come back to life is very descriptive and amazing. The cruelty he suffered by some caregivers was shocking!
I really enjoyed this book and I think everyone who reads it will take something positive out of it that they can be thankful for or be more aware of in their daily life.

Heartfelt

I have never heard such detail about simple life experiences like how Martin was able to articulate in this book. Some of his experiences where so hard to listen to but his joys out shined the dark times.

An absolutely astonishing book

I love biographies, but had never come across Martin’s story before. I stumbled across his remarkable TED Talk and found it gripping. I had bought and began listening to this audiobook within minutes. It seems trite to say it is inspirational, but it is. What a lesson in patience. How he has emerged, found his voice and created a life is truly great. Highly recommended- and do also seek out and watch his TED Talk.
