Welcome to the summer of 1985 in Philadelphia, when the city was rocked—in almost every sense of the word—by two unprecedented events: Mayor W. Wilson Goode’s May 13 decision to bomb the headquarters of MOVE, a controversial Philadelphia-based radical communal organization, and the July 13 Live Aid concert, where international rock royalty convened in Philly to raise money for victims of the Ethiopian famine. Separated by just two months and eight miles, these events would showcase both the best and the worst of the so-called City of Brotherly Love.

It is 1987, and a small Irish community is preparing for a wedding. The day before the ceremony, a group of young friends, including the bride and groom, are involved in an accident. Three survive. Three are killed. The lives of the families are shattered and the rifts between them ripple throughout the small town. Connor survived, but living among the angry and the mourning is almost as hard as carrying the shame of having been the driver. What is the role of the writer? Prophet? High priest of art? Court jester? Or witness to the real world? Looking back on her own childhood and writing career, Margaret Atwood examines the metaphors which writers of fiction and poetry have used to explain - or excuse! - their activities, looking at what costumes they have assumed, what roles they have chosen to play. In her final chapter she takes up the challenge of the title: if a writer is to be seen as "gifted", who is doing the giving and what are the terms of the gift?

Baumgartner’s life had been defined by his deep, abiding love for his wife, Anna, who was killed in a swimming accident nine years earlier. Now 71, Baumgartner continues to struggle to live in her absence as the novel sinuously unfolds into spirals of memory and reminiscence, delineated in episodes spanning from 1968, when Sy and Anna meet as broke students working and writing in New York, through their passionate relationship over the next 40 years, and back to Baumgartner’s youth in Newark and his Polish-born father’s life as a dress-shop owner and failed revolutionary.

Description
Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

Classic!
Ahh, gay romance in the 19th century. Misery, loss, alienation, evasive attachments, a perfectionnistic performance of identity, the inability to love and/or to be loved, topped off with a severly morose atmosphere. This book was both throrougly gay and throroughly depressing. Loved it. I will never read it again.

So much angst
I really enjoyed listening to this novel but I doubt I'd have enjoyed reading it quite the same way. The narrator does a wonderful job. he conveys everyone's unhappiness. They are questioning their lives and David and Giovanni are questioning their sexuality. I think Giovanni is sure of who he is and he loves David, but David definitely is not sure and holds onto his girlfriend Hella as proof he's not gay. it's a very sad novel about a time when people were scared to accept the truths about themselves and opted for self-loathing instead. Unfortunately not much has changed because sadly we're reverting to repressive times...so much for progress. My first book by James Baldwin and I hope to read more. Recommended reading.

A bit older but a beautiful painful story
I found over all it was a wonderful story, though painful at times. I suggest that folks do read the book and see what it’s about. The story is still one that resonates in communities today.
