Description

Georgia Peach Book Award

For fans of Girl, Interrupted, Thirteen Reasons Why, and All the Bright Places comes a novel Nicola Yoon, author of Everything, Everything, calls "a haunting, beautiful, and necessary book that will stay with you long after you've read the last page".

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.

Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

A deeply moving portrait of a girl in a world that owes her nothing, and has taken so much, and the journey she undergoes to put herself back together. Kathleen Glasgow's debut is heartbreakingly real and unflinchingly honest. It's a story you won't be able to look away from.

Includes an author's note read by the author.

"Equal parts keen-eyed empathy, stark candor, and terrible beauty. This book is why we read stories: to experience what it's like to survive the unsurvivable; to find light in the darkest night." (Jeff Zentner, author of The Serpent King)

"Raw, visceral, and starkly beautiful, with writing that is at times transcendent in its brilliance.... An unforgettable story of trauma and resilience." (Kerry Kletter, author of The First Time She Drowned)

"A breathtakingly written book about pain and hard-won healing.... I want every girl to read Girl in Pieces." (Kara Thomas, author of The Darkest Corners)

“A Girl, Interrupted for a new generation.... The story of the mad girl is ultimately a story about being a girl in a mad world, how it breaks us into pieces and how we glue ourselves back together." (Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart and Abandon Me)

“Dark, frank, and tender, Girl in Pieces keeps the reader electrified for its entire journey. You’re so uncertain if Charlie will heal, so fully immersed in hoping she does.” (Michelle Wildgen, author of Bread and Butter and You’re Not You)

"Girl in Pieces has the breath of life; every character in it is fully alive. Charlie Davis' complexities are drawn with great understanding and subtlety." (Charles Baxter, author of National Book Award finalist The Feast of Love)

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Narrator Julia Whelan's initial portrayal of Charlie reveals her unwillingness to speak - as well as her pain, fear, and fury.... Gradually, Whelan recounts the changes Charlie experiences in a treatment center as she reaches out and hopes for healing. On release, Whelan contrasts the safety Charlie has come to know with her mother's coldness and desertion, but Charlie's grit is impressive as she makes faltering steps to support herself financially, artistically, and emotionally. Whelan's portrayals of minor characters aid the realism of the optimistic ending." (AudioFile)

"Charlie Davis has been damaged and abused after several years of living on the streets, but she is fiercely resilient. Though it will appeal to readers of Ellen Foster, Speak, and Girl, Interrupted, Girl in Pieces is an entirely original work, compulsively readable and deeply human." (Julie Schumacher, author the New York Times best-seller Dear Committee Members)

Mixed feelings

I heard many good things about this book and was prepared for it to be hard to listen to. The book itself contains many related factors for those dealing with addiction and self harm. This book however is not exciting; the plot is just a plateau and you are told the story of the everyday life of a teenage girl.
I loved how raw this book was and how it was not plot driven yet so realistic.
Personally, something was missing to make this an amazing story about relapse and recovery.
I have been contemplating returning it and the only reason I am not is because many stories like this do not exist. Many people have stories with similar struggles and I feel like I have to keep Charlie’s to honour that.

Honest review

I freaking love Julia Whelan, she did an immaculate job here.

Where to start? I’ve read this 6 times in the span of a year and each time I still loved it as much as the first time.

I’ll say off the bat this book doesn’t have any big plot twist or secrets, which honestly doesn’t matter to me. Charlie Davis is such a young girl who’s been through so much hell but she stays strong.

This is such a diferent book from anything else I’ve read but I love it so much.

Kathleen Glasgow did such a beautiful job with such a broken and messed up situation. I love stories that don’t sugar coat and that don’t make things out to be something they aren’t. It’s a fictional story that feels so real and is unfortunately a reality for a lot of people, but the portrayal of Charlie, and Riley, and Blue, and Linus was so unbelievably raw and real.

1000% recommend, that being said there are very heavy topics and themes, so if that could affect you in any way I recommend looking into it to be sure it’s a good read for you :)

Good book slow listen

Interesting book but hard listen wouldn’t read again personally.

The story line is relatable but redundant and causes the listener looses interest due to repeat story line

It’s ok

I wish more was touched on resisting, handling emotional pain, and that it ended with a recovery story. Not all teens will she that she made it out, she’s an author now.

For teens

Could be a good book for teens. Overdramatic like a hurting teenagers mind often is. Unrealistic parts of the story. Mostly annoyed because I was looking for an epic memoire and had this reccomended to me by the internet. It’s very obvious only part way through that this story is untrue. Could be positive for angsty teens, but is a bit unrealistic and overdramatized for my adult self.

GIRL IN PIECES

WARNING SPOILERS INCLUDED:
This book should most definitely NOT be read by those actively self-harming or suicidal as it lacks all hope. Frankly, it's not one that i feel adds much for the reader at all. It feels like there is little balance between continuous, unending tragedy and the reality that in the real world there are moments of hope to balance the darkness. Every single character in Charlie's life dies horribly, lives in tragedy or causes harm. The ending itself provides only the barest glimmer of hope. That is neither real life nor the story connected w cutters in general. As one who has severely s-harmed in past due to a horrifically painful life, still this book did not represent me or many other cutters who sadly will not see their story reflected here. The extremes in this story blunted the very real pain, depths of confusion, chaos and struggle that many cutters are trying to numb. You read the story and kind of drown in the continuous crisis after crisis w no room to breathe and hear Charlie's emotions, her deep thoughts. It felt like a roller coaster that was all downhills, no breaks to pause and fall more fully into the actual STORY of Charlie. She became 1-dimensional.
It also felt like some characters who added absolutely nothing to the storyline were simply added for gratuitous pathos. Ex. the "sisters" in the cafe from the cult background. Why? It was a pointless addition of yet one more tragic character that added no value to the story. It left me as a reader dipping further and further into the thought that every human being in the story was deeply damaged and beyond redemption thus it must be true that everyone in the world must be deeply damaged and beyond redemption so why bother? There were not the pure threads of hope to light the way between horror after horror.

Its unfortunate bc Glasgow CAN write. She can really write, so she could have written this story powerfully and with great artistry if she had w both a greater sense for the arc of a story AND the reader's need to find hope, created a narrative here beautiful and wretched and deeply human. Unfortunately THIS was not that story. An opportunity missed. Which is incredibly sad.

Regret.

This book was really really bad. I know that it’s YA, and all YA tends to be cringey and uncomfortable, but there were parts of it where I just honestly felt embarrassed to be listening to this. I’m not shy with my books, they’re usually always playing on Alexa, but as soon as my husband would get home I’d shut this one off!

I realize the subject is a sensitive one, but I don’t believe the author did people who self harm any favours. It all read very stereotypically.

Also, side note, the narrators male voice is absolutely the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I legit have never felt so uncomfortable listening to a book before.
