Publisher's Summary
Emma's life isn't nearly as perfect as she thought. In fact, it's a house of cards, and it's getting ready to come tumbling down.
A frightened woman in need of help shows up at her door. Emma leaves the room and, when she returns, the woman and her child are gone. There is no evidence that they were there, but Emma knows what she saw. Doesn't she?
She might've been able to convince her friends and family, and even herself, of the truth if that had been the only incident. But it wasn't. It was only the first.
In a few short weeks, Emma goes from belle of the ball to social outcast. Everyone in her life thinks she's crazy. And they might not be wrong. The Kramers have a secret after all, and Emma could be following in her grandmother's footsteps.
Murder was never part of the deal before.
But it is now.

A Bit Smutty And Heavyhanded With Themes..
..but still quite enjoyable - if you can get it as a "free" option.
This Leah Montgomery offering frequently reminded me of the novel/play 'Gaslight'.. with a woman wondering if loved ones are attempting to drive her crazy by convincing her that she isn't seeing what she's seeing. Montgomery's writing is capable, her story has plenty of X-rated scenes sure to please fans of her typical bodice-rippers (although it feels *excessive* to a mystery-thriller/psychological-suspense afficianado like me), and her theme of a woman manipulated - "on a string" - is consistently delivered.
Unfortunately, she overdoes it: having her characters constantly lust after each other and transforming her purported "sympathetic" protagonist ('Emma Kramer-Stirling') into a bit of a "victimized" whiner.
As to presentation: Reader Lauren Ezzo does a respectable job narrating this book - but does nothing *particularly* impressive. Her diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are creditable.. but Ezzo reads too slowly, overenunciates at times, is occasionally overdramatic (admittedly following the author's lead), and exhibits subpar interpretations of male characters.
Overall, Tantor Audio cast this project "adequately" (another reader could easily have been equally effective).
If you can get this 7/10-star recording as part of the 'Plus' initiative (as I did), it absolutely merits a download. This book was a great distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons. Should they ask for a Credit for 'Girl On A String', however, you should spend it on something else.
