Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best seller - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

It's 2524. Harvest is a peaceful, prosperous farming colony on the very edge of human-controlled space. But humanity has unknowingly trespassed on holy ground - straying into the path of the aggressive, theocratic empire known as the Covenant. What begins as a chance encounter between an alien privateer and a human freighter soon catapults all of mankind into a struggle for its very existence.

But humanity is also currently locked in a bitter civil war of its own: the Insurrection. With resources strained to the breaking point, the ultimate survival of Harvest’s citizens falls to a squad of battle-weary UNSC Marines and their inexperienced colonial militia trainees. In this unlikely group of heroes, one will stand above the rest - a young Marine staff sergeant named Avery Johnson....

Great overall book

I have read about half of the halo library and this book has always been one of my favourites for getting started into the lore of the universe, and Jen Taylor wins as the female vocals

What I’ve been missing

I had never read Contact harvest. And it is something I didn’t know i’d come to regret so much. Now, having finished it, I can only hope to keep this amazing story in my heart and as inspiration for my future work.

I only now realize how much I miss Johnson…

I’ve never played the video game

Wow fam. I don’t know anything about a halo. A friend recommended this to me and I need to tell you - for sci fi, it’s awesome. I wish it was longer so I could delve more into the society, history and universe of the aliens. The way that they all interacted and the religion formed around “oracles” and “forerunners” was great. Super believable. I wish the treachery of certain characters was captured more but I’m sure as I read more of these I’ll get it. I liked Avery’s character and how he struggled with his compassionate humanity and being a soldier. The voice acting was great, writing was wonderfully cinematic and descriptive, the characters were resonant - like i even cried a couple times haha.

10/10 if you know nothing about halo, still an awesome read/listen.

Not what is expected in the halo series.

I have come to expect the action packed nature of the first 4 halo books following the Spartans and the game series. This book however is a departure from the one sided story-telling and primarily human focused tales. I wish I read/listened to this instalment first as it fits outside of the first 4 published novels occurring before the Spartans were in existence.

The description of the covenant side of things and the dual storylines was mostly very well done however. I liked understanding a little more of the backstory and the reasoning for the covenant actions against the humans. Inevitably after the first 4 novels I was missing the same caliber of Spartan action in comparison to the action of the harvest military groups.

I did however appreciate and enjoy the introducing of a second female narrator for this audio book. Previous books only had a single narrator for all characters so that was an interesting choice here and one that was appreciated.
