The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: Human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens - both pre-existing ones and those newly identified - emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what - if anything - can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies?

Every time we eat, we have the power to radically transform the world we live in. Our choices can help alleviate the most pressing issues we face today: the climate crisis, infectious and chronic diseases, human exploitation and, of course, non-human exploitation. Undeniably, these issues can be uncomfortable to learn about but the benefits of doing so cannot be overstated. It is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects.

Description
New York Times Bestseller
“This book may help those who are susceptible to illnesses that can be prevented.”—His Holiness the Dalai Lama
“Absolutely the best book I’ve read on nutrition and diet” –Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones Solution
From the physician behind the wildly popular website NutritionFacts.org, How Not to Die reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death.
The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.
The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.
History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks.
In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen -a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor's orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

A skeptical omnivore read this book
First off, Dr. Greger's performance, tone, and reading style are excellent. It is hard to get into an audiobook where the individual reading is monotone, or unenthusiastic about the subject matter. Dr. Greger is obviously passionate about this book and it comes through in the manner it is read, which made it all the more entertaining.
Disclaimer: I am not vegan, I eat a fair amount of animal products, and I have my own biases. So, I struggled to take a lot of the studies he mentioned as gospel because simply, there are so many factors and unknowns when it comes to studies of diet. All animal products, all meat, is not created equal, and I find it difficult to accept studies that equate a pepperoni stick as being as carcinogenic to grass fed bison. Also, I am always highly skeptical of claims that include words like "reverse", "cure", or "prevent" as stand alone claims.
That being said, this book definitely highlights the need for society to lean more towards a plant based lifestyle. And Greger himself notes that any change to incorporate more whole plant based foods is a good one. He gives valuable, insightful, scientifically argued strategies on how to combat the dilemma that is the Western diet, and resulting chronic ailments of the Western lifestyle. As a healthcare practitioner it was an incredible insight into the lack of nutritional education that exists within the healthcare system, and has increased my resolve to do better by the patients I interact with. It has made me re-evaluate my own diet in order to do better to incorporate a variety of vegetables and more of them.
It was a very enjoyable read, and I would recommend it!

I lost 8.8 pounds in 12 days
After visiting my doctor I was informed that I have high cholesterol at moderate risk. Since I did not want to take medication from the big pharmaceutical companies I chose to lower my cholesterol naturally. I have completely changed my diet from eating animals, fish and dairy products to 100% plant based foods. I have also dramatically increased my physical activity to a minimum of 90 minutes 4 to 5 times per week.
This audiobook is a must for health and welfare for humanity.

10 Stars!
This book was packed with so much information. Dr Greger has a wonderful sense of humour and is a great speaker. I learned so much.
In fact , I listened to the Audio book twice then bought it in hardcover, plus the cookbook.
I’ve been following his nutrition advice and adapting to a plant based diet. I can’t believe the changes in only one week. Dr. G gives a clear and simple outline, of how to get started. Highly recommend How Not To Die.

An absolute pleasure to listen to
Dr Michael Greger uses such easy language to help understand mass amounts of data and research regarding a plant based diet. The information is easily accessible and understandable, and the cherry on top is getting to listen to him talk for hours on end! Dr Greger’s enthusiasm about health is contagious and I’m already looking forward to buying his cook book. His description of recipes that he does include in How Not to Die are mouthwatering, and he’s just an absolute pleasure to listen to. I already am planning on listening to the book again! Would definitely recommend.

Well worth it for Part 2
Loved it. As a generally healthy person Part 2 was the most usefull as it talks about the changes you can make to your diet in detail and suggestions for getting all the good stuff worked in. Feel free to skip around Part One if one of the illnesses is of no interest to you but the 2nd half is worth the credit.
