Publisher's Summary

We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic, but despite being inundated with diet advice we are only getting fatter. We count calories and exercise regularly, yet still the pounds won't budge. Why?

In this highly enjoyable and provocative book, Dr Jason Fung sets out a groundbreaking new theory: that obesity is caused by our hormones rather than a lack of self-control.

He reveals that overproduction of insulin in the body is the root cause of obesity and obesity-related illnesses including type 2 diabetes and offers robust scientific evidence that reversing insulin resistance is the only way to lose weight in the long term.

It turns out that when we eat is just as important as what we eat, so in addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong eating habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

Editorial Review

Despite all of the nutrition trends, fad diets and focus on exercise, the obesity problem is worse than ever. However, in The Obesity Code, Dr. Jason Fung offers us a totally different approach to weight loss.

In order to achieve lasting results, this Audible audiobook presents the idea of intermittent fasting. The logic behind this method is based on the fact that contrary to popular belief, fluctuations in weight are not due to lack of self-control, but rather due to hormones - more specifically, insulin. Dr. Fung, a Canadian nephrologist and author of The Obesity Code, explains that obesity and obesity-related diseases (such as type 2 diabetes) are related to the overproduction of insulin and supports his idea with scientific evidence. According to him, breaking the cycle of insulin resistance is key to losing weight and obtaining long-term results; and in order to do so, intermittent fasting is the solution. The timing of meals plays an essential role in controlling levels of insulin and as such, Dr. Fung walks listeners through the principles of intermittent fasting. In addition, the title provides five basic steps: a set of life-long habits to improve health and control insulin levels with proper nutrition.

Brian Nishii’s expressive and steady tone sets the pace of this captivating and thought-provoking listen. An indispensable listen for those who are ready to make a change in their lives for the better.

Most useful book on obesity causes

Doctor Jason Fung’s book is simply revolutionary in many ways. He is part of a determined, intelligent, and standing with integrity group of medical professionals who are not afraid to publish true facts about so called “nutrition science” that is largely responsible for today’s epidemic of diabetis, obesity and plethora of related metabolic illnesses. My deep respect to this doctor for all amazing work he is doing that benefits anyone who seeks to grow and maintain their health and to age well.

Great Information

Dr Fung provides great information on why diets don't work longer term. He also explains the relationship between weight gain and insulin and how fasting addresses the shortcomings of other diets. The narration really the material down. Excessive inflection and pronunciation errors often distracting from interesting information.

Excellent book.

This book has changed the perceptions of obesity and weight loss, also highlights the ever changing scientific recommendations. Yesterday's ones are not valid today, today's findings may be disproved on coming days.
This book gives lots of tips on obesity control.

Great....but...

Let me start with the pluses. This book does a great job of explaining the science behind obesity. It’s very comprehensive without becoming too technical. If you are someone that likes to understand the “why”, you’ll really appreciate the information contained within.

The author has a sense of humour and is practical about what people realistically can and will do. So many weight loss books are so impossible that you know from the start you’ll never be able to achieve the perfection they profess. The author treats you like a human being with a social life, preferences, a job, kids, etc and not like a superhuman robot.

If I’m being picky, I would say that at times I was thinking “okay, I get it, let’s move on”, but overall the author does a great job of explaining some complex issues. He cites ample peer reviewed, quality scientific studies to back up his opinions and methods.

The biggest downside for me was that the narrator frequently refers to tables and charts that just aren’t available to the audiobook listener. Most of the time I was okay without them, but there were a few that it would have been nice to get the info from. The narrator refers to them but never goes over them.

He does read the appendix at the end, that include a recipe, an FAQ, etc. Some of those might be nice to have on an actual document you can come back to, but at least he read them for the audience so you can take notes if needed.

I am not someone who jumps on every fad, or has tried a million diets. I’ve always been an everything in moderation kind of person. However, this book has given me a lot of useful information that I feel well equipped to try. The author provides plenty of solid evidence for fasting and it has changed my mind about this method. I think it’s a great read for anyone who is overweight or has a loved one that is. Just from an understanding point of view you’ll feel better about being overweight. There is no guilt or shame placed on you for being a human who happens to be overweight (or know someone that is).

As I stated earlier, there are times when you feel a little clubbed over the head and wish it could move along faster but the author was engaging and very practical in his advice.
