Publisher's Summary

We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic, but despite being inundated with diet advice we are only getting fatter. We count calories and exercise regularly, yet still the pounds won't budge. Why?

In this highly enjoyable and provocative book, Dr Jason Fung sets out a groundbreaking new theory: that obesity is caused by our hormones rather than a lack of self-control.

He reveals that overproduction of insulin in the body is the root cause of obesity and obesity-related illnesses including type 2 diabetes and offers robust scientific evidence that reversing insulin resistance is the only way to lose weight in the long term.

It turns out that when we eat is just as important as what we eat, so in addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong eating habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

Editorial Review

Despite all of the nutrition trends, fad diets and focus on exercise, the obesity problem is worse than ever. However, in The Obesity Code, Dr. Jason Fung offers us a totally different approach to weight loss.

In order to achieve lasting results, this Audible audiobook presents the idea of intermittent fasting. The logic behind this method is based on the fact that contrary to popular belief, fluctuations in weight are not due to lack of self-control, but rather due to hormones - more specifically, insulin. Dr. Fung, a Canadian nephrologist and author of The Obesity Code, explains that obesity and obesity-related diseases (such as type 2 diabetes) are related to the overproduction of insulin and supports his idea with scientific evidence. According to him, breaking the cycle of insulin resistance is key to losing weight and obtaining long-term results; and in order to do so, intermittent fasting is the solution. The timing of meals plays an essential role in controlling levels of insulin and as such, Dr. Fung walks listeners through the principles of intermittent fasting. In addition, the title provides five basic steps: a set of life-long habits to improve health and control insulin levels with proper nutrition.

Brian Nishii’s expressive and steady tone sets the pace of this captivating and thought-provoking listen. An indispensable listen for those who are ready to make a change in their lives for the better.

FANTASTIC BOOK AND AUDIBLE READER

I thought this book was beautifully written, very easy to understand, very thorough, and well researched therefore grounded in science. I love how the author broke down each part of the problem that contribute to obesity and then finally offers appropriate and doable solutions with regard to managing the problem. I truly enjoyed the reader; The tone, inflection and speed with which he read was very appropriate and engaging. Truly, I would be happy if he read all the books I bought. to me:) I have already recommended this book to several people and colleagues. It reaffirmed things I was already aware of, cleared up things I was confused about, and offered new insights. I loved everything about it!!! Thank you so much for such an enjoyable read!!!

A lesson on butchering pronunciation

Overall I found the book interesting and the information provided seemed to be evidence based, and as mentioned in the book, the author tried to use only peer reviewed data based on human trials. It was good to have the figures and charts that were referred to throughout the book via the online PDF made available.

The drawback would be in the narration production. It is well read and clear with interesting tone, but there were a few words that were remarkably mispronounced. Often it was almost comical on how badly words would be pronounced and butchered over and over again. Examples: Quinoa, Glycogen, many of the drug classes. Even words as simply as Mono-*. It was comical listening the the evolution the term sulfonylureas took. Pronounced numerous ways but never properly.

The mispronunciation distracted away from the quality of the information provided and it was clear that a medical professional was not involved during the production of the audio book. It was well below expectation I have for Audible.com products.

Made me truly understand...

This book made me truly understand the key elements of health and obesity! The added details made me understand many points other authors had made but that i hadn’t fully realized the significance of what they were saying. This book is mostly about the physiology at play and less about the diet. Although I’m a keto lifestyle advocate because it’s a good fit for me, it also demonstrated that it is possible to be healthy without being so strict on carbs depending on the type of carbs, the timing and what you eat with it. It helped make sense of why other cultures who have eaten lots of carbs in the past managed to be healthy. I have listened to it 3 times because there is a lot of information in this book. This is the best audiobook so far!

Super helpful

This book and way of life is a life changer. I could not have read it hard copy because I may have got lost in scientific terminology, and never finished it. Worth every penny!

Not for me

I found that there were too many stories. I had to listen to the whole history of how people used to think people were getting fat. I just wanted to know what helps with losing weight and and bust a few myths on the way. I wished that the author would just get to the point.

A lot of waffle.

The book is very repetitive. I’m not sure it’s the voice performers fault. The book is written in a ‘chatty’ style which sounds weird and unnatural as a performer reads it.
The book is disappointing. You hear why all diets don’t work with various examples that are very random e.g how vaccines work. If you are interested in how the human body works in general then it could be of interest. If you want guidance on how to lose weight this is not the book for you. The take home info is: you need to fast and then try to not eat refined food. It would of been useful to then have another chapter on a fasting schedule and diet plan. That’s his next book. I guess he wants you to buy both. It’s very annoying really!

The book that never get to the point

The book has a whole is not bad for people that doesn't have time to do proper and extensive research on internet. Put from my point of view, a massive chunk of what is said is stuff already of the known. The audio book takes hours, yes hours to get to the point. I persevere through the long and insurmountable useless information given in the first few chapter to finally learn... Well... Nothing really...

Weight explained from every angle, including those avoided by most current weight management plans. I recommend it especially to those that are tired of failing.

repeditive and condescending.

Struggled to finish this one. Very repeditive and a condescending tone through out the whole book. No new information. Reduce carbs, fast, fix insulin resistance. No real plans or tangible advice.
