Publisher's Summary

Here and Gone is a gripping, wonderfully tense suspense thriller about a mother's desperate fight to recover her stolen children from corrupt authorities. It begins with a woman fleeing through Arizona with her kids in tow, trying to escape an abusive marriage. When she's pulled over by an unsettling local sheriff, things soon go awry, and she is taken into custody. Only when she gets to the station, her kids are gone. And then the cops start saying they never saw any kids with her, that if they're gone she must have done something with them....

Meanwhile, halfway across the country, a man hears the frenzied news reports about the missing kids, which are eerily similar to events in his own past. As the clock ticks down on the search for the lost children, he, too, is drawn into the desperate fight for their return.

Ok

Ok for quick beach read. Tip: listen at 1.25 speed for better experience. Reader was so slow that the increased playback speed is hardly noticeable.

A pretty good book that dragged in the middle but the narration was good through-out and is worth the time spent.

Great story

loved it! Couldn't stop listening. This is a story that really got to me as a mother and makes you think... could something similar really happen?

Excellent story!

Finished this in 1 day! The reader was wonderful with all of the different characters. With this story being so good, I was able to get all of my housework done in one day!! Definitely a great story that I'll play again driving to the beach this year!!!

Great Story and Performance but Underwhelming

This was the first book in a long time that I purchased on the merit of the blurb alone - and the positive reviews made the decision to get it even easier. I love all genres, mostly, and thought that as a fan of Gone Girl and the Reacher series (both of which this was compared to favorably), I'd love this. And, I liked it very much. Gone Girl is on a plane on its own - it's specific, terrifying, a page turner, literary - but I didn't realize how much effort goes into breezy, formulaic mystery thrillers with an infallible hero (like Reacher) until I listened to this. This was not as good as Gone Girl (not much is) and lacked the propulsion of a mystery/thriller. It's almost like a really good writer came up with a great story idea and, after the first few chapters, went after the low-hanging fruit the rest of the way. That said, it was easy to listen to and I found myself looking forward to my commute to finish the book.

Painting the picture of Audra's past as she experiences a terrifying present makes sense, but each instance of flashback was just piling on misery. I got it - her husband's a jerk, her stepmother is terrible and while flashbacks made me feel sorry for the protagonist, they didn't propel the story forward. As a matter of fact, they made me think less of Audra and wonder why she didn't leave. The husband is presented as such a one dimensional manipulative jerk, that it didn't hold water that she remained. It didn't compute. Speaking of one dimensional, there was not much to the villains, the police nor the mysterious stranger. However, I'm a sucker for the old adage, 'The good guy pets the dog, the bad guy kicks the dog,' so the characters were serviceable and I loved the good guys and hated the bad guys enough to make me tear a path to the end of the book.

Overall recommended; it hums along, but it does not sing.

Here is a fast-paced book....

From the beginning, I was hooked. Story was compelling and the performance was superb. It gave attention to the vulnerability of a woman when traveling alone with her children in addition to the issue of defending oneself when one's past reputation is not stellar. If I had to give one criticism, I would say that the book's ending was a little bit too contrived for me.

Started great then went downhill

What was most disappointing about Haylen Beck’s story?

This book started great and then devolved, I kept waiting for it to rebound yet it did not. The performance was really good. I think this could have turned into a great novel, so I am disappointed.

Pretty good

All in all it was worth a listen. I had a hard time getting use to narration.
