À propos de cet audio
When Poland is invaded in WWII, the Gold family sticks together in horrific conditions to survive.
It’s 1942, and the Nazis are rounding up Jews in the Polish town of Pinczow for transport to the Treblinka death camp. Leib and Hanna Gold thought they had more time to develop an escape plan. While Leib leaves to negotiate a hiding place, Hanna and their children, Shoshana, Esther, and 12-year-old David, steal away in the night to find shelter with a family friend. Leib promises to join them in the morning, but when daylight breaks, Leib had vanished. Hanna must flee to a safer refuge or she and her children will perish.
So begins a true story of terror, suspense, and deplorable hardship that lasts more than two years. In a place where everyone is afraid, neighbors turn on neighbors, gentiles betray Jews, and Jews victimize each other, hoping to survive the Holocaust. David Gold's memories of his formative years during World War II are captured by his niece, author Ella Burakowski, in this heart-stopping testament to the human spirit.

“...an affirmation of human courage.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“The story of a Polish-Jewish family forced into hiding from the Nazis is by its very nature compelling, and the Golds’ familial bond and undaunted spirits are commendable....” (Publishers Weekly)
“Even though the subject matter is difficult, the portrayal of the characters is dynamic and heartwarming.... A fine purchase to support curriculum related to World War II and Holocaust studies.” (School Library Journal)
I instantly connected to the strong personalities of each family member, brought to life by the skilled narration. As a listener, I really appreciate when the narrator pronounces foreign words correctly. It adds authenticity to the story and adds to the flow. I especially identified with 12-year-old David. The courage and strength of this child is hard to comprehend, especially in the context of the lives most kids live today.
The strife and love between the women was evident as well. These strong personalities thrown against life or death came through loud and clear. The sheer will to live can bring out the worst in human nature and also the best. It made me think about how I would react.
As a teacher, I was excited to download this book. A colleague of mine has been using it in her classroom ever since it was awarded honor book from the Ontario Library Association.
There’s a lot of history packed within the story line. It kept me on the edge of my seat, especially once the action sets in around chapter 4 when the family is on the run not knowing when and if they will reunite with Leib, the patriarch of the family. When they finally land in this hidden enclosure where they were forced to live for over 2 years, I felt claustrophobic just picturing it. Six people cramped together and one of them is a 12-year-old boy? The strength of the human spirit is truly beyond comprehension and it's depicted very well in this book. I could feel the lice, the mice, the heat, the cold. The descriptive writing drew me in and I found myself sitting in my driveway listening, wanting to get to the next chapter to see what happens.
This book, like The Diary of Anne Frank is a must read (listen). You won’t be able to stop. I finished it in 2 days.
A testament to the human spirit

they went through many trials and tribulations that nobody should ever have to go to to have lived through the time of the Holocaust as you I can't even imagine and my heart goes out to them.
I will forever be thankful for the knowledge of experiences that every Holocaust Survivor and their families try to bring to light to the world. he will never truly know or feel what they went through but through them expressing what happened we will gain some understanding so that's something like this wontt happen again.
