Publisher's Summary

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

The past truly comes alive as you take a series of imaginative leaps into the world of history's anonymous citizens, people such as a Greek soldier marching into battle in the front row of a phalanx; an Egyptian woman putting on makeup before attending an evening party with her husband; a Greek citizen relaxing at a drinking party with the likes of Socrates; a Roman slave captured in war and sent to work in the mines; and a Celtic monk scurrying away with the Book of Kells during a Viking invasion.

Put yourself in the sandals of ordinary people and discover what it was like to be among history's 99%. What did these everyday people do for a living? What was their home like? What did they eat? What did they wear? What did they do to relax? What were their beliefs about marriage? Religion? The afterlife?

This extraordinary journey takes you across space and time in an effort to be another person - someone with whom you might not think you have anything at all in common - and come away with an incredible sense of interconnectedness. You'll see the range of possibilities of what it means to be human, making this a journey very much worth taking.

Knowledgeable and interesting

Robert Garland effectively portrays the life of our descendant, not the famous or the powerful, but everyday people struggling to exist and to find meaning in their lives. You truly feel the compassion he has over these ordinary people.

Incredible Knowledge and Passion

I greatly enjoyed this man's writing, passion and narration. He clearly knows his stuff and loves his work. I learned a great deal about the ancient world and how it affects us now. Especially word origins and customs.

Interesting

The most interesting part of history are the human stories. I enjoy this perspective. Kept me interested all the way through. I found myself wanting to make up fictions about the people in every age here. can some author do that for me? Maybe I will do it myself ...

Insightful

Great background, for the most part, of the ordinary peoples lives, during extraordinary times. That said, that was one of the most "Woke", academics , I've had the privilege observe.. . The English Channel,, being called The English Channel,,, is,, Chauvinist !?!?
Get a grip fella. And omitting historical instances, to reinforce a desired conclusion.
Sigh!!! My love of history remains,, undimmed.

Great insight individuals in the Ancient World

As someone still somewhat new to audio books, I found this book to be wholly captivating and extremely intriguing. Not once did I find myself drifting off to think of something else nor did the narrator lose my interest for even a moment. He speaks slowly and clearly so that you are able to soak in every word. This audio book is less like a text book and more like a casual lecture. What I really enjoyed is that it isn't bogged down in dry facts, rather the author/narrator expertly crafts a vision of what it must have been like to *be* a person in a particular time period of the Ancient World.

Of course, this means talking of the life of early man to Greece to Rome and the places those people migrated or conquered. It doesn't give perspectives on Ancient Asia or the like as I can imagine those worlds and the lives of their inhabitants are quite different than the subject matter of this book.

From the common man to the rich and medically unwell, to young and old, man and woman, there is plenty of perspective in this wonderful set of lectures. I listen to this at work and I am transported back to various periods of history, sometimes becoming so lost I lose track of my own work. This audio book definitely increased my respect for our ancestors of the Ancient World.

great history lectures

Very interesting, it makes you think about how we came to be. The other side is the life of the average person not usually discussed or talked about.

Walking through history with Professor Garland

What a fabulous way to learn about ancient history. I feel like I have a much better understanding now of what it was like to grow up during the thousands of years that make up the human history of the world. Thank you for your extremely interesting prospective Professor Garland and for keeping me excited to learn all I can about our history.
