Publisher's Summary

Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the twentieth century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

Now, years after the end of World War II, it may seem incredible that our most valued institutions, and way of life, were threatened by the menace that Hitler and the Third Reich represented. Shirer’s description of events and the cast of characters who played such pivotal roles in defining the course Europe was to take is unforgettable.

Benefiting from his many years as a reporter, and thus a personal observer of the rise of Nazi Germany, and availing himself of some of the 485 tons of documents from the German Foreign Office, as well as countless other diaries, phone transcriptions, and other written records meticulously kept at every level by the Germans, Shirer has put together a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany, and planned and executed his six-year quest to dominate the world, only to see Germany go down in flames.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is a vast, richly rewarding experience for anyone who wants to come to grips with the mysterious question of how this menace to civilization ever came into being, much less was sustained for as long as it was. The answer, unfortunately, is that most of Germany, for a whole host of reasons, embraced Nazism and the fanaticism that Hitler engendered.

Great Book

This was an amazing book that detailed the rise and fall of Hitler and the third Reich. I think this book could have been several hundred pages shorter as I found it went into too much detail about certain subjects which left me a little bored at times.

A Great Masterpiece

#Audible1

I have always wanted to get to this monumental work, and hoped it would live up to its reputation. It did. It is masterfully researched and written. Most importantly its research and conclusions have stood the test of time, proving to be one of the great works to examine the rise of Hitler and Nazism. The narrator Grover Gardner is exceptional. His ability to clearly articulate the often challenging German words with ease and in a pace and style that made the book compelling and hard to turn off. This is one of the greats. Well worth the credit and the time to work through this masterpiece.

literary and narrational masterwork

there is no wonder this book became an instant pillar of history over night. it's moving, masterfully written and and as long and black as it is you almost don't want it to end.

the narration enhanced my experience of the book many fold. this guy deserves and award for this.

A brutally honest history

If you think that Hitler and the Nazis where anything but a gang of crooks propelled by the twisted dreams of a crazed man to whom no one dared standup, give this a listen. It may start a bit slow, but the lest two sections will be over before you know it.

wonderful piece of historical writing

The vocal performance is excellent. The narrator does an amazing job of making the writer's words come to life.

This is one of the most interesting, thorough, and engaging pieces of history I have interacted with. it was informative and thorough, while remaining very accessible.

I highly recommend this to anyone with even a passing interest in history and the Second World War.

Truly Amazing

After completely listening to the book I have to say I am very impressed, while being a bit dated it hit all of the high notes exceptionally well. I would definitely recommend this behemoth of a book

Deeply informative, unsettling modern parallels.

This book is a lengthy time investment. The information therein, the chronological delivery with unprecedented behind-the-scenes records is impossible to fully appreciate on a single listen.

The parallels of very real modern perils are unmistakable.
