The Grim Dark Future begins

#Audible1 The book that started it all. Dan Abnett is a master storyteller and once again he proves it. What is the Price of Loyalty? What is the Price of Betrayal? This is the story of Horus, the Warmaster of the fledgling Imperium of Man and favored son of the Emperor of Mankind. A Genetic superhuman warrior known as a Primarch, Horus leads his Legions of genetically engineered Legio Astartes (Space Marines) on the final conquests of the Great Crusade to reunite the lost colony worlds of Humanity. Despite the lessons of the past, the utopian future dreamed of and promised by the Emperor never seemed so close. That is until the forces of Chaos begin the slow, insidious infection of once loyal troops and their Primarch Warmaster.

Dan Abnett captures the feel of hope and Promise, the spirit of brotherhood and martial prowess that the Imperial Forces are famous for and that the Primarches and their original Legions were renowned for. In the face of the of tragedy, You can almost feel the dramatic pause in as the combined might of the Imperial forces wait in suspense for the outcome of the tragedy that started the then unknown rebellion. Worth the listen if you are a Warhammer 40k fan or even if you are just a sci-fi fan.

Insanely epic

It's a lot more compelling than you might assume. There is over the top sci-fi action but also gripping characters, ideas, and story.
The narration is some of the best I've heard and adds a ton of gravitas to the book. The narrator's voice suits the book quite well and has come to define this series for me.

The main characters are a bunch of fascistic conquering space imperials so it's a bunch of anti-heroes taking centre stage, yet the cracks and doubts that appear in their crusade and worldview make it interesting. There is much heavy handed emphasis on honour and glory, but you see how that leads them astray as the book progresses and how it could become their undoing.
It's one of those books that is actually kind of depressing the more you think about it but I couldn't stop listening. The world-building sets up the tragedy and ultra violence of this universe really well. I somehow ended up really liking it and would recommend to anyone who likes this genre, especially if you appreciate a grimdark tone. To my knowledge these books and this story universe is where the term "grimdark" originally came from, so that basically sums up the kind of book it is. For that type of book, it is excellent.

a sensational story of brotherhood in space,

It really captures the impossibility of an astartes to turn on another. It sets the political landsacpe of the imperium pre horus heresy. It lets you delve into more lore on races and human factions that could show what humanity could have been instead of the imperium.

As grandeur as could be

As a fan of the 40k table top miniature game, this book delivers a wonderful insite to the events that lead the universe as it is. Loken is an amazing main character with great support characters as well. The narration is expertly done and a ads the the grandizing the book so expertly employees.

40k is amazing

For me this was my second audio book on the 40k universe. I've just gotten into everything really, including the table top and man I am loving all of it.

If you're new to the 40k universe give the first 4 books a listen on the horus heresy, will really get you into the universe and understanding of it all.

I'm shocked how likeable Horus was before the corruption, really adds to the tragedy of the setting. Amazing book. Enjoy listener.
