Description

A New York Times best seller!

A growing number of Americans want to tear down what it’s taken us 250 years to build - and they’ll start by canceling our shared history, ideals, and culture.

Traditional areas of civic agreement are vanishing. We can’t agree on what makes America special. We can’t even agree that America is special. We’re coming to the point that we can’t even agree what the word America itself means.

“Disintegrationists” say we’re stronger together, but their assault on America’s history, philosophy, and culture will only tear us apart. Who are the disintegrationists? From Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States to the New York Times’ 1619 Project, many modern analyses view American history through the lens of competing oppressions, a racist and corrupt experiment from the very beginning. They see American philosophy as a lie - beautiful words pasted over a thoroughly rotted system. They see America’s culture of rights as a façade that merely reinforces traditional hierarchies of power, instead of being the only culture that guarantees freedom for individuals.

Disintegrationist attacks on the values that built our nation are insidious because they replace each foundational belief, from the rights to free speech and self-defense to the importance of marriage and faith communities, with nothing more than an increased reliance on the government.

This twisted disintegrationist vision replaces the traditional “unionist” understanding that all Americans are united in a shared striving toward the perfection of universal ideals.

How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps shows that to be a cohesive nation we have to uphold foundational truths about ourselves, our history, and reality itself - to be unionists instead of disintegrationists. Shapiro offers a vital warning that if we don’t recover these shared truths, our future - our union - as a great country is threatened with destruction.

a very interesting take

I know that mr. Shapiro has his own bias and you can definitely tell that in his writing. But outside of his bias he does make a very valid point. The things that he mentions we see happening in the United States and in my own country. he calls them deconstructionist, I've always known them as social constructionists. I'm not sure how we could come to a mutual definition but they are pretty much the same. It raises a lot of questions about the future of the western world because this is going on in many countries.

Just finished first pass of the book.

My main regret is not getting a text version that comes with a glossary.
It's hard to believe that Shapiro has had a good and honest conversation with anyone left of Andrew Neil. Aside from general framing things that I personally disagree with and the... odd decision to do impressions of politicians when he quotes them, It's a pretty interesting listen. Looking forward to go through his references before having a second listen through.

Absolutely Essential for us Gen Z

As someone who graduated in 2015, Ben helps intellectually navigate the absurdities of both past and present culture. Outstanding how much benefit there is to be learned here for anyone from my generation. If you want to be able to debate old millennials and some of their ridiculous world views, read this.

So Relevant

Thank you for writing this book. It should be required reading in middle school. An excellent review of history and exposes Leftists for who they really are.

If you need a reason to buy the audiobook, look no further

Great book! Felt like I was just listening to an extra long Ben Shapiro Show. I will admit, I couldn’t play it at the 1.8x speed I normally do with audiobook, but that’s no problem!

If you’re looking for that 1 more reason to buy the audiobook.. the answer is YES... he does the voices!!

solid logic

Listened once and reviewed some segments a few times. I will listen to the complete book again and likely again. There is hope for America while we have people who can articulate the facts like this. Should be a text book for every student of American history. Thank you Ben Shapiro.

Statistically callous conservatism

The author has many important points and perspectives worth hearing. The core weakness of his arguments are the statistical callousness of his arguments that lack empathy for people who have fallen through the cracks.

At times, Ben ventures into the ranks of a full blown ideologue reaching absurd conclusions by misunderstanding terms like 'systematic racism'. The argument goes like this: If systematic, then so deeply pervasive, system corrupt. If system corrupt, blow up system. If you blow up the system, then must admit our core values are corrupt. If core values corrupt, constitution corrupt. If constitution corrupt, then disintegrate. If disintegrate, then the 'marriage' of the union must be a divorce. There is a seductive vitriol to Ben but he seems unable to see past his personal circumstances of a well educated and intelligent man.

Ben's approach is ultimately top-down elitism trying to tell those that have done worse in society that they have actually 'done better' and points to the warm embrace of statistics to comfort them. This technocratic approach is devoid of empathy and rings hallow from someone who has been lucky enough to enjoy the full scope of advantages and freedoms (and its spoils).
