I can’t say enough good things about this book!
- By Ann on 2020-10-21
Publisher's Summary
From Dr. Nicole LePera, creator of "the holistic psychologist" - the online phenomenon with more than two million Instagram followers - comes a revolutionary approach to healing that harnesses the power of the self to produce lasting change.
As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients - and for herself - she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical, and spiritual wellness that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she’d learned with others - and soon “The Holistic Psychologist” was born.
Now, Dr. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for self-healing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction - activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.
In How to Do the Work, Dr. LePera offers listeners the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental wellness and self-care.

Unrealistic View Of Boundaries
I am so disappointed in this book. I find that instead of finding help, one finds an unrealistic view of relationship boundaries. I’m not a doctor but not answering a call on purpose just because you want to set a boundary because someone drains you during a conversation ?? Really ?? Whatever happened to being open and honest and just telling someone how you feel? I found this book to be farfetched and sniveling. I don’t believe it’s honest to set a boundary and not even tell the other person how you feel. How did she think people/family would react to her boundary? Of course that person will ask if everything is ok. They don’t know you feel this way because you haven’t told them. It’s almost like the author is living in her head. I feel like this is the coddled generational book of what’s in it for me, kind of deal. This is rubbish. Sorry ...

Who let her narrate her book?
Nicole someone on your team needs to be fired for letting you narrate your book without kindly pulling you aside and telling you it was unwise and untenable. I say this with immense love because I know that this important tool is NOT going to reach the amount of people that it should as is currently. It is more than monotone; it’s an unfamiliar/often unused accent style, choppy, and it’s is frankly un-listenable. The great concepts are lost as there is no ease of listening; instead listening is active and difficult.
Many people who sample the audiobook, will not purchase it simply because of the narration, which is more than a shame, it’s wrong. After I told my friend about your book, she listened to the sample and said that it was going to give her a headache. I agree, I am getting a headache listening.
There are authors like Malcolm Gladwell and Glennon Doyle who beautifully narrate their work, unfortunately Nicole, your immense talents do NOT extend to narration, and I am actually aghast that this was green-lit.
I will say, as a professional voice artist myself, you've given me new faith as to why people pay me to professionally lend my voice; while a voice to speak is something most of us on this planet have, that does not a professional voice artist make.
*Edit it's interesting to see more reviews coming in, excusing the narration performance and calling people out for honest 1-star reviews, a thing that is meant to be helpful. While some people who listen won't be bothered, it is still valid that many, many others are, and will be. You do not need to invalidate the experiences of others because you personally found it 'fine'. Good for you, but it's clear that for others it's not fine, and it's valuable feedback to Nicole and her team that people are not buying or returning the audiobook, and this glaring issue needs addressing immediately. To pretend it's not an issue is doing a great disservice to the people who can, and need to fix this.
Personally I am very wary of reviewers who are primarily reviewing other reviewers, and not the book.

Respect other Professionals
The author, a professional. It is too bad that this EXCELLENT material was almost impossible to listen too. I was so disappointed when I heard the first minute. The author clearly lacks the skills of a professional performer. I can’t decide if I need to return it, the performance was so bad.
It’s too bad that the author does not have respect for professional skilled performers. Is it ego? Is it the need for the extra recognition?
Either way let the professionals be the professionals. The author’s message is significantly hindered by this “performance”.

Narration is terrible
I have been so excited for this book and I love Dr. LePera's work so much! But I do agree with the other reviews, the narration is awful. There are moments where you feel like Dr. LePera is just about to get into her narrating groove, but then she quickly falls back into this strange, halting way of speaking where she emphasizes the same part of every sentence. It's like listening a kid in class read from a dense textbook who's taking his job a little too seriously.
I feel like I have a high tolerance for poor narrators, but it is too difficult to follow what she is saying. I'm returning it and buying a print version. I don't understand how this passed a quality check.

Powerful ( but let's do a 2nd take)
Ok, so let's talk 1st about the overall elephant in the room. The Narrative. Yes, I agree 100% that Dr. Nicole should not be doing the narration of the book. At first I was a bit surprised and wasn't sure I would be attentive enough to listen. I am so glad I didn't stop. This is by far the most powerful book I've listened too and had the most perfect timing. I will listen again and again , soaking up all of her experience and expertise she has to offer. Thank you for writing this book, it is more than I ever thought it would be. Very eye opening.
