Description

The life-changing principles of Stoicism taught through the story of its most famous proponent.

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was the final famous Stoic philosopher of the ancient world. The Meditations, his personal journal, survives to this day as one of the most loved self-help and spiritual classics of all time. In How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, psychotherapist Donald Robertson weaves stories of Marcus’ life from the Roman histories together with explanations of Stoicism - its philosophy and its psychology - to enlighten today’s listeners. He discusses Stoic techniques for coping with everyday problems, from irrational fears and bad habits to anger, pain, and illness.

How to Think Like a Roman Emperor takes listeners on a transformative journey along with Marcus, following his progress from a young noble at the court of Hadrian - taken under the wing of some of the finest philosophers of his day - through to his reign as emperor of Rome at the height of its power. Robertson shows how Marcus used philosophical doctrines and therapeutic practices to build emotional resilience and endure tremendous adversity, and guides listeners through applying the same methods to their own lives.

Combining remarkable stories from Marcus’s life with insights from modern psychology and the enduring wisdom of his philosophy, How to Think Like a Roman Emperor puts a human face on Stoicism and offers a timeless and essential guide to handling the ethical and psychological challenges we face today.

outstanding! changed my life

for a while I dealt with anxiety and depression, I fought with myself about trying to be a better person and understand who I am, but I never got anywhere as my lazyness trapped me. This book helped me understand not only how I can control the vices of my personal self but to understand how any negativity and struggle in your life is meaningless to you, you are your own being and negativity is something you can easily push away as you can a box.

👍🏿

I have been looking for a book on this subject for awhile and was not sure if the author was just using Marcus’s name as bait to hook gullible readers in.
This was not the case. The stories which were relevant thousands of years ago hold onto their power and meaning to this day.
The Author tells a bit of his own story as well at the end which I found very interesting as well.

Two thumbs up from me.
And the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review for an audiobook.

Fantastic content and narration

This was my first book by the author and I believe I have discovered a gem.
I have already listened to it twice and I am sure I will be coming back to it agin soon! The content is rich and narration by the author is priceless!
Listening to Donald Robertson reading the last chapter on “ Death and the view from above “ is a delicious meditation experience.

phenomenal philosophy

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I am interested in becoming a better version of myself. I believe that stoicism has the tools I was lacking to do so, I was able to apply some of the teachings to my own personal issues and have learned to better handle my emotions.

Repeat listen.

I’ve been listening repeatedly to this book. First, the ideas of stoicism are very cleverly offered in plain language while being wrapped within interesting biographical details of Marcus Aurelius. This really helps (me): keep attention, heighten understanding of the layers of ideas discussed and develop “pop up” thoughts that spring to mind as you attempt to interpret and react to the world in a new way. This mix of biography and explanation of stoic ideas offers valuable built in “examples” of what is meant by each concept. Oh, and did I mention the fabulous narration!?

You'll enjoy it. Promise.

It borrows heavily from Pierre Hadot's The Inner Citadel, but that's not a bad thing. Because The Inner Citadel can be a bore to read at times, while this book is a pleasure from start to finish. Also, but borrowing from Hadot, Robertson is borrowing from one of the greatest scholars on stoicism, as well as the text itself.
Wrap that up in a comforting therapist's scottish accent, and you've got a really pleasant listen that will inform you as well as entertain you.
If I'm wrong and you don't love it, you can kick me in the nuts. But you're gonna love it.

Effective narration. Fascinating subject matter.

I took a flyer on this book; the subject matter and its delivery pulled me in and held me. I wish there was more to this.
