About this listen

Here is one of the best historical novels ever written. Lame, stammering Claudius, once a major embarrassment to the imperial family and now emperor of Rome, writes an eyewitness account of the reign of the first four Caesars: the noble Augustus and his cunning wife, Livia; the reptilian Tiberius; the monstrous Caligula; and finally old Claudius himself and his wife, Messalina. Filled with poisonings, betrayal, and shocking excesses, I Claudius is history that rivals the most exciting contemporary fiction.©1934, 1961 Robert Graves (P)1987 Recorded Books Classics Historical Fiction

A good story, good writing, good performance, good history, even funny in places. Would recommend.

Very good book.

I enjoyed this far more than I expected. It was on a book club list, so that’s what motivated me to read it, and I’m glad I did. A great way to learn Roman history. Nice conversational style, storytelling at its best. Great narration by Nelson Runger. Recommended.

Excellent narration!

Robert Graves intriguing tome about famous Roman Caesars is rendered boring and tedious by the amateurish performance of the narrator. He needs to listen to someone like Stephen Fry and learn what true performers can deliver. This was a dreadful effort and I’m very sorry I listened to it.

An interesting work spoiled
