Publisher's Summary

Explore the history and cultural impact of a groundbreaking television show adored by old and new fans alike: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Over the course of its seven-year run, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cultivated a loyal fandom and featured a strong, complex female lead, at a time when such a character was a rarity. Evan Ross Katz explores the show’s cultural relevance through a book that is part oral history, part celebration, and part memoir of a personal fandom that has universal resonance still, decades later.

Katz - with the help of the show’s cast, creators, and crew - reveals that although Buffy contributed to important conversations about gender, sexuality, and feminism, it was not free of internal strife, controversy, and shortcomings. Men - both on screen and off - would taint the show’s reputation as a feminist masterpiece, and changing networks, amongst other factors, would drastically alter the show’s tone.

Katz addresses these issues and more, including interviews with stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, James Marsters, Anthony Stewart Head, Seth Green, Marc Blucas, Nicholas Brendon, Danny Strong, Tom Lenk, Bianca Lawson, Julie Benz, Clare Kramer, K. Todd Freeman, Sharon Ferguson; and writers Douglas Petrie, Jane Espenson, and Drew Z. Greenberg; as well as conversations with Buffy fanatics and friends of the cast including Stacey Abrams, Cynthia Erivo, Lee Pace, Claire Saffitz, Tavi Gevinson, and Selma Blair.

Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born engages with the very notion of fandom, and the ways a show like Buffy can influence not only how we see the world but how we exist within it.

What the critics say

"Evan has produced the definitive feast for Buffy Buffs!" (Andy Cohen)

"Evan Ross Katz has jumped into the world of Buffy in a way no one ever has before. I’m in awe of the way Evan loves Buffy, cares about Buffy, and writes about Buffy. Each chapter reignited my love for the show in a new kind of way. This book is a deep dive and a love letter and a brilliant reminder that a good piece of art can live on far past a series finale.” (Kiernan Shipka)

"As someone who didn't watch Buffy until meeting Evan, his fandom, understanding, and total embrace of the nuance and complexities of the show ravages this book, and turns a chambré viewer into a fangirl. His writing is fresh, and so are his perspectives - through reading, you contemplate the series through his eyes and discover new vantage points through anecdotes from those orbiting the Buffy universe. Not only is the show iconic, so is this author." (Christopher John Rogers)

Did not disappoint

Great insight and interviews on the show itself and the controversy surrounding it. The book being read by the author himself and the show clips really added to the enjoyment.

I knew better and I bought it anyway

this book is tiresome, so tiring some in fact that I quit listening to it with 3 hours left. I had reservations to begin with because of the nature of the writers of the other work and the stuff that I had read quoted another sources but I had an audible credit and I thought it might be a decent trip down memory lane. I was wrong it is an exposition on navel gazing and victim politics, and a significant portion of its run time or text is the author reading tweets and other social media allowed. I would estimate 20 or 30% back. if you thought you would get a balanced look at the pros and cons of Buffy 25 years later, don't buy this book. if you want an incessantly narcissistic justification for progressive politics and queer identity, this book is definitely for you.

this has no direct bearing on the book but it's hanging around in the background, why do we never hear stories about Joss whedon from Firefly or from the set of the marvel movies? why is it only ever people who worked on Buffy or angel or Justice League who have something to tell you? there may be a perfectly sound answer, but the question is worth asking.

An extensive blog not a biography.

If you are looking for an unbiased biography, look somewhere else. It's all about the writer and how the show makes him feel. This works fine for a blog, but fails for a Biography.

Conflicted

I’m conflicted about this book. On one hand, I have never felt as seen as I felt while watching Buffy. It truly means the world to me and I get the sense from this book that it means the world to Evan too. On the other hand, I don’t know who his target audience was. I don’t know what this book was trying to say - is it about Joss, Sarah, racism, misogyny, the television industry as a whole? It was too all over the place. Most of the book is spent summarizing the series, a disappointment for a super fan. Also, the audio was at times confusing. I wish Evan had changed his inflection at least to indicate when he was quoting someone. The narrative could be hard to follow.

Terrible book anti straight male

If ZERO was possible . This book hates straight white men who make america great. I lived and bleed Buffy in high School. I was 13 when it started and loved every Tuesday at 8pm but this author is not someone I would ever talk to or want in my circle.

Thank you, ERK and SMG

I’ll start by saying that this book (audio & hardcover; yes, I bought both) was much more in depth and emotional than I expected. Evan tells a complete story that brings the nostalgia, the laughter, the tears and the joy rushing back in the same way that watching the BTVS does. I cannot recommend this book enough for Buddy fans and even for anyone who is just a pop culture but. The interviews from cast, namely Charisma Carpenter, Julie Benz & Emma Caulfield really help being the story into focus. It is unfortunate that some of the main cast & crew declined to interview for the book but after reading, I can understand a some the reasons why. Chapter 22 in particular made my heart swell hearing everyone gush about SMG. It is the type of thing one always hopes others think and say about them. Congratulations Evan Ross Kate for knocking it out of the park. You have gained a fan.

Very insightful of the actors. An inspiring read

I really enjoyed getting to know more of the actors behind these characters that I still watch to this day. Knowing that in some cases, there was a lot more going on behind it all, gives the show even more depth, in my opinion. It is proof of skillful acting. And I liked getting too hear of Evan's own journey and how it has afftected his life, even bringing about this moment of publishing. Very good

Fan S ervice

I expected to learn some new info about the show but it isn't even as informative as Buffering the Vampire Slayerer. This book is not informative but does make him sound slightly stalkerish...

Stay away

The author is so full of himself and such an awful narrator that it ruins the whole thing almost instantly.
