Publisher's Summary

Reidon Ward will become a god.

He doesn't know it yet, of course. Reidon was born weak, sickly, and small. Afflicted with a painful disease and abandoned by his parents because of it, he has had to fight tooth and nail for every minor advantage life has allowed him.

However, his perseverance has not gone unnoticed, and when the most powerful artificial intelligence in human history takes an interest in him, things began to change quickly. Granted a CAD—a Combat Assistance Device—with awful specs but an infinite potential for growth, Reidon finds himself at the bottom of his class at the Galens Institute, one of the top military academies in the Collective. Along with his best friend, Viviana Arada, Reidon will have to start his long climb through the school rankings and on to the combat tournament circuits that have become humanity's greatest source of excitement and entertainment.

So begins the rise of a god. So begins the ascent of the Stormweaver.

Amazing story, can't wait for Book 2

This is an amazing underdog story. Well thought out universe, and backstory. Great character growth for the main character, as well as secondary characters. Narration was great, Luke Daniels did his best to differentiate character voices which was extremely helpful, I especially got a kick out of Catcher's voice.

The CAD grading system had much to be desired though. A countdown alphabetical system implies an upper cap, F-S... ugh, it should have just been numbers with tiers every 10 levels and it would be been mostly the same. However the Growth stat should not have been part of the CAD's overall ranking, it should have been to the side for the user (and hidden for people not granted access) since it doesn't affect combat capability in the slightest in any given fight, it only applies after a fight is finished. Any one of Rei's close friends (Catcher and Aria) should have known exactly what his growth stat was since he was constantly saying the levels of his other stats, it's just simple math to determine averages. Which means his beginning CAD ranking should have been F0.

And while i do understand the academy mostly teaches new users to use their CAD's, they are all members of the military. Then spend more time focusing on training to fight other users and ZERO time learning about the actual enemy, or how to fight them. I'm sure there could have been team simulations pitting them against under powered Archons. That way they would become familiar with how they looked/sounded, fought, adapted. Also zero instructors or staff made themselves available at training centers to watch over students training and offer guidance or advice. All the students were so focused on either their honor/reputation taking a hit, or later becoming jealous about competition for sports, and not one of them was like "Wow, this is the type of person I want to back me up on the battlefield!"

All these small criticisms aside, this was an amazing book. I'm eagerly looking forward to book 2 in March. Only 4 months away... yay.

Glad I found it

Very well written book. Vivid imagination pictures for the mind. I enjoyed it all and are looking forward to the next book (2).
This is NOT a space opera book but takes place in a small area.

Just read

Story is told smoothly full of action, twists, and yuks making you hesitant to pause or fall asleep. And the other comments seem to agree! My only complaint is there isn’t more to the series.

Fun progressive fiction.

This book had some struggles with dialogue and plot. The conversations were often too quippy or full of exposition, and though I expect some of that in every sci-fi or fantasy novel, there were a couple a moments that were too much. Some of it was done pretty well - the nerd trope that two of the main characters have going on gives a reason to be well-versed and informative for the reader and can mask a lot of exposition dumps, but at some points it becomes a crutch. I hope the sequel will lighten up on this.
The plot was predictable at all stages, but I didn't pick this up to be wowed by spectacular plot twists - I picked it up because Space Cyborg Ninja Fights and I got that, damn it. It was a fun romp through campus life, and watching Rei get stronger and try to outhink problems was great popcorn lit. The book does leave us with some dangling plot threads I expect to be woven into a more cohesive pattern when book 2 arrives, whenever that will be.
Luke Daniels did a great job of keeping the voices distinct and engaging, and I think his performance was top-notch.
All in all, if you want something low stakes but fun, you could do worse than Iron Prince. I enjoyed it enough that I'll pick up book 2 when it releases.

Hooked from start to finish

It's been a while where a book has had to hooked like this one has, I blew through it in no time as it carried me through workdays and even stole sleep from me.

I am eagerly awaiting the second book of this series.

Long but fun

A great book that is well worth the time. The narrator made some…questionable choices (18 year olds who sound like 50 year old chain smokers and some strange accents) and there are more than a few places where two different tales of the same section made it into the final file but it’s still worth a listen.
