Story
After suffering devastating loss and making drastic decisions, Zetian finds herself at the seat of power in Huaxia. But she has also learned that her world is not as it seems, and revelations about an enemy more daunting than Zetian imagined forces her to share power with a dangerous man she cannot simply depose. Despite having vastly different ideas about how they must deconstruct the corrupt and misogynist system that plagues their country, Zetian must join this man in a dance of truth and lies and perform their roles to perfection in order to take down their common enemy.

Story
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

An instant number one New York Times best seller!
Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid's Tale in this blend of Chinese history and mecha science fiction for YA listeners.
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected - she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way - and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

A wonderful surprise
When I went into this book I was a little hesitant, not usually being a fan of giant mechs. But I have to say, my worries were immediately put to rest. It really doesn't feel like any giant mech stuff I've ever seen or read.
This is defiantely worth listening to, I loved every second of it!

Loved it!
The narration, first of all, is great! Her pitch, cadence, and acting are all perfect and she pronounces all the names correctly (as far as I can tell)!
The story has exciting battles, challenges, and a bit of romance. The characters are all flawed and feel more realistic because of it. The main character herself is very passionate about her cause but also a hypocrite when she meets opposition. However, I wouldn't call it a character flaw or poorly written because anyone who experiences trauma and betrayal, will be passionate about getting justice.
I recommend this book if you're looking for something exciting and action-packed, with a female lead and perspective!

can't wait for further instalments!
it was initially difficult to get into due to the huge amounts of unfamiliar vocabulary both the Chinese words and names and the fantasy/sci-fi terms of this world, but once you start to catch up you realize what an incredibly well thought out and deeply complex story Xiran Jay Zhao has created.
The further you go the more deep everything gets and in the hands of a less skilled author it might become tedious and convoluted, but every twist and turn simply tied up a stray thread or question clearly showing that they were planned and present in the story all along.
It's hard to review without giving spoilers so I'll leave it at that, very excited to read what happens next

I didn’t expect to like this one as much as I did. The excitement, the romance sub plot, the fighting and the world was so interesting. I loved how they brought in so much Asian culture to this fantasy like aspect. I was constantly entertained and wondering what happened next. I think honestly the narration was the best part so highly reccomend a listen!

This is sooo freaking good!!!
I am kicking myself for letting this sit unread for months before I got to it.
Amazing dystopian sci-fi with intense relationships and even more intense fight scenes.
This is like mixing Hunger Games with Tron and then adding entirely new bits to both.

Polyamory. This is the first time I have ever seen this representation and it made me cry with joy on multiple occasions.
The story is incredible, beautifully written and the performance by the reader was enthralling.
It gave a grim reality of society with blooming hope that there are those who fight to do right and make it better.
