Publisher's Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) One by One returns with an unputdownable mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.

Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

“The Agatha Christie of our generation” (David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author) proves once again that she is “as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime” (The Washington Post) with this propulsive murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

What the critics say

“Deliciously dark and utterly addictive—my favourite Ruth Ware yet!”
LUCY FOLEY, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Apartment

“Every Ruth Ware novel is a unique and unexpected gem and this one is no exception. A heady, tense, slow-burn dream of a book, multi-layered and steeped in atmosphere and peril. I loved every page.”
LISA JEWELL, New York Times bestselling author of Invisible Girl
“Ware develops both the reader’s doubts about and concern for Hannah as the suspense builds gradually under a masterful barrage of red herrings . . . Riveting.”

It didn’t get better.

Not Ms. Ware’s best work. None of the characters were likeable, especially main character. Moved really slowly. I should have stopped listening a few hours in.

Mixed feelings

Story concept interesting with twists and turns. Needed more editing for many parts went on too long or were repetitive in dialogue making it a frustrating experience.

Disappointing

I love Ruth Ware books and was very excited for a new one to be released - maybe that was partly my fault for being too excited but this was just not the same as the others I’ve read - I found the plot just not engaging and the characters meh to then believe some of the happenings - I guess it was I was left feeling quite meh overall and wishing there’d been more to the story and characters

The IT Girl dragged on too long!

I originally had bought the book and couldn't get through it, I felt it dragged on so I bought the book on audible so I could finish it. Not my favorite Ruth Ware novel.

Chapter 27 & still waiting for the story to develop

I had high hopes for this. Listening to it at 1.2x; trying to like the exaggerated self-deprecation, overly circumspect protagonist who went to Oxford but works at a bookstore.
Halfway thru & barely getting to the main plot - hope the 2nd half picks up.

A Gripping Oxonian Morality Tale

Listening to this dark and winding chronicle of a group of Oxford pals proved to be a very immersive experience. Spanning a decade, the protagonist Hannah is gripped by the need to uncover what truly happened on the night her best friend April was murdered at her Oxford College on an other-wise exciting and celebratory evening. The performance of this Ruth Ware novel truly draws one in to the story. The manner of its telling invests the reader in caring about the cast of characters and where they fit in to the twisty plot.

(One aspect that I could not help but consider was how different and less troubled Hannah's life would have been had she not won a place at Oxford, as a graduate of an obscure state school).
