About this listen

The Sunday Times Best Seller

James Acaster has been nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award five times and has appeared on prime-time TV shows like Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo and Russell Howard's Stand Up Central.

But behind the fame and critical acclaim is a man perpetually getting into trouble. Whether it's disappointing a skydiving instructor mid-flight, hiding from thugs in a bush wearing a bright red dress, or annoying the Kettering Board Games club, a didgeridoo-playing conspiracy theorist and some bemused Christians, James is always finding new ways to embarrass himself.

Appearing on Josh Widdicombe's radio show to recount these stories, the feature was christened 'James Acaster's classic scrapes'. Here, in his first book, James recounts these tales (including never-before-heard stories) in all their glorious stupidity.

What the critics say

"James Acaster has a brilliant comic mind, crackling with energy every bit as much as his corduroy slacks." (Milton Jones)
"I don't think I've ever read a book that has made me cry with laughter as much as this one. It was very difficult reading it in public as I looked like a madman." (Richard Herring)

I would very much enjoy hearing James Acaster talk about whirling dervishes in corduroy. I would enjoy listening to James Acaster talk about anything. He just has funny bones. #Audible1

I listed to James Acaster's Classic Scrapes while building a fence. At one point my neighbour popped outside to see if I was ok. Apparently, doubling over with laughter and tears streaming down my face was easily mistaken for serious distress. High praise for the author indeed!

Embarrassing to read in public.

Old book, and if you’re familiar with his stand-up it won’t be much new, but it’s still woven nicely.

James is winsome perfection. This is the mental version of a packet of custard creams. Hell why not, two packets!

Laughing out loud like an insane person

I get that these are supposed to completely unbelievable stories that are also 100% true… But they feel so relatable. And you become so enamoured with James as he tells of all his scrapes. Such a good read.

Ridiculous and somehow relatable.

I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this audio book, James' comedy shined throughout the book. The self deprecation was truly appreciated and to this day I find myself going back and listening to my favorite chapters again and again. His delivery is spot on, I found myself having to pause every once and a while because I was laughing so hard. One day I hope he does a re-rendition of La la la la Humpty.

A total knee slapper
