Description

At the end of a dark prairie road, nearly forgotten in the Kansas countryside, is the Finch House. For years it has remained empty, overgrown, abandoned. Soon the door will be opened for the first time in decades. But something is waiting, lurking in the shadows, anxious to meet its new guests....

When best-selling horror author Sam McGarver is invited to spend Halloween night in one of the country's most infamous haunted houses, he reluctantly agrees. At least he won't be alone; joining him are three other masters of the macabre, writers who have helped shape modern horror. But what begins as a simple publicity stunt will become a fight for survival. The entity they have awakened will follow them, torment them, threatening to make them a part of the bloody legacy of Kill Creek.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"A slow-burn, skin-crawling haunted house novel that had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. This debut establishes Scott Thomas as a force to be reckoned with on the horror scene. " (Shane D. Keene, HorrorTalk)

Too many words...

Scott Thomas is a great writer, from a technical point of view - strong imagery and character build. His shortcoming, in my humble opinion, is that in Kill Creek he takes too long to get to the point of the story and, when he finally does, it all seems to fall apart. The ideas are there, but the substance that should hold them together is lacking. Because of this, I will probably not purchase another Scott Thomas book since I buy fiction - especially horror fiction - to be dazzled by the scares. If I want a drama, I would buy a drama. I must commend, however, Bernard Setaro Clark who is a captivating narrator.. .

A perfect gothic tale

If you like a rich, detailed journey to a haunted house this book is for you.
The performance by the narrator matched the caliber of the story beat by beat and character by character.
So much fun!

Super Creepy

I loved this book. Stories about haunted houses are common, but this plot was very original. There are certain scenes that I could hardly listen to because it was so scary!

A somewhat slow listen

Kill Creek was just okay, a slow burn that only seemed to have it's flames fanned in a few moments. The ending was a small saving grace but I found myself waiting for the book to be over to move onto something else.

a page turner

Well done. I didn't think I would be able to get thru this book based on the subject matter, but it was a well put together story.

Scott Thomas ia the master of the macabre.

My tormented mind literally aches at the thought of this book ending. It physically hurts to close this book knowing it's all over. Scott Thomas is that of which he writes, he is the real master of the macabre.

I am not one of those people that rereads a novel but I could easily see myself reading KILL CREEK by Scott Thomas over and over until my last breath. I am forever a fan and cannot wait to read VIOLET as it's said to provide the nightmare fuel patrons of the horror fiction genre constantly seek. Something I particularly enjoyed that I think is unique was the author's use of metaphors throughout the novel. Scott Thomas has this incredible way of writing and it is accentuated through his fantastic use of the metaphor. So, here's another point I need to emphasize about the author. When he does something he does it BIG. The content of this story has an impact on the readers experience whether it be the characters  psychological trauma, the imploding internal conflict or even the gruesome act of murder. Scott Thomas delivered in a BIG way. KILL CREEK is a novel that stands out in so many ways but I still can't get over the haunting theme, I may not ever shake the chills I got from this read. Simply put, if you're looking for a terrifyingly good story from an author that can deliver the horror goods then this is the book for you.

"He was not above calling a book unreadable. But their literary merit wasn’t important at this moment. They were words strung together to represent the firing of neurons and the transferring of information through synapses. They were human minds set into paper, and Sebastian loved every single one of them, even the ones he found disposable."

So here's one thing I need to be perfectly clear about. I am not here to judge a writer or scrutinize the methods in which they deliver a story. Instead, I like to highlight their abilities. BUT, we've all read a book where you raise an eyebrow or scrunch your nose at a sentence in which the author stuffed in a metaphor that stunk to high heaven. There is such a thing as a bad metaphor but you won't find one in this wicked tale. Scott Thomas writes a story that flows beautifully. Everything fit exactly as it should. The only time I found myself raising an eyebrow were the moments of absolute astonishment at the authors incredible ability to craft the perfect metaphor.

KILL CREEK is one of those books that can utterly consume a reader's attention. It didn't matter what part of the book I was reading, my mind was fully engaged start-to-finish. I felt despair for the characters, I connected emotionally to every scene, and I cringed at each dramatic swing of the bloody hatchet. I mentioned that Scott Thomas delivered in a BIG way and I truly mean that. He delivered for readers, he delivered for writers, and he delivered for the horror community. This is the kind of fiction that fans of the genre desire and novelists aspire to write.

"Funny thing about rumors,” Sebastian said softly. “It doesn’t matter if they’re true or false, only that people believe them."

This book is scary and I understand that should be obvious because it's horror fiction but it's scary on a different level. If you ask me what scary is. It's that the scary thing doesn't just spook you in the moment. The scary thing stalks you like prey and latches on to you, forever changing your future. This is what I mean when I speak of the haunting theme that was present while reading KILL CREEK. I think that also happens to be the effect this book had on me. It spoke to me from the shelf and once it finally grabbed ahold of my attention, it relentlessly held tight. The reading experience I had from this book will stick with me for a VERY long time.

If it's not clear already, KILL CREEK by Scott Thomas is a 5 / 5 star read in my opinion. When (not if but when) you read this superbly written novel, you will most certainly be needing some time to recover. I'm in the midst of a book hangover of epic proportions. But don't fret, the author has yet another novel to fill the horror void in your life. VIOLET is a book that comes highly recommended by those that live for horror fiction. Let the words consume you as they did for me and devour every terrifying word Scott Thomas puts to paper.

Fantastic

Absolutely loved this story. It is a bit slow moving at first, but trust me, it’s worth it. Voice acting was outstanding.

Better Than Expected

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. The story itself held my attention. And you may think you know what's going on or what's going to happen, then a sharp curve smacks ya and something completely different goes on instead. I will admit, I wasn't sure about it at first. Another story about a haunted house with some unsuspecting people spending the night. But, I would be eager to see this as a film at some point. It was enjoyable. Worth the time and money, in my opinion.
