Publisher's Summary

Gillian Flynn says, "Karin Slaughter is simply one of the best thriller writers working today."

Saturday night dates at the skating rink have been a tradition in the small southern town of Heartsdale for as long as anyone can remember, but when a teenage quarrel explodes into a deadly shoot-out, Sara Linton - the town's pediatrician and medical examiner - finds herself entangled in a terrible tragedy.

What seemed at first to be a horrific but individual catastrophe proves to have wider implications. The autopsy reveals evidence of long-term abuse, of ritualistic self -mutilation, but when Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver start to investigate, they are frustrated at every turn.

The children surrounding the victim close ranks. The families turn their backs. Then a young girl is abducted, and it becomes clear that the first death is linked to an even more brutal crime, one far more shocking than anyone could have imagined. Meanwhile, detective Lena Adams, still recovering from her sister's death and her own brutal attack, finds herself drawn to a young man who might hold the answers. But unless Lena, Sara, and Jeffrey can uncover the deadly secrets the children hide, it's going to happen again...

Cara

Karin Slaughter continues to blow me away with her dark and twisted, incredibly gripping writing. I prefer this book to the first in her Grant County series and look forward to the next. Kathleen Early is a pro narrator- probably my favourite I’ve listened to.

Narrator issue

Why does the narrator over-pronounce all the ‘h’s’ in ‘wh’ words (why, where, whip, what)....it’s sooooo annoying.

Kathleen Early is amazing

This book was pretty hard to slog through story wise and its subject matter was obviously uncomfortable. But miss Early hooks us up again with another incredible performance.

Too Sensationalist

I love Katherine Slaughter and know her books get real violent, but typically this violence is undercut by a genuine critique and a curiosity to make sense of it - there is something real about it. This book felt different. It feels like she chose child abuse to be sensational - like, to be as egregious and graphic as possible. The violence was more like a prop and given the visceral horror of the violence, this put me off. Narratively, I still liked the book, and I like the parts with Leana that built off book one, but not her best for sure.

Shocking story

This book started of like a rocket launch and kept moving along. This compelling story focused on an extremely troublesome and indeed gut wrenching subject. I’m sure the author felt heart sickened when researching this subject but it was well written and beautifully narrated.

Great but graphic story

Should maybe have been titled Trigger Warning? Very strong story, but very difficult to get through in parts. Well narrated and executed, but for trauma survivors... maybe give this one a pass.

Great second book in the Grant Series

The subject matter in this book is heartbreaking and Karin Slaughter manages to make it seem as though you are there for all of the horror. Well written and will make you angry, sad and sick to your stomach while also giving you the urgency to find out who and why.
