Publisher's Summary

"So I thought I might take up paragliding. You know, buy one on eBay and just jump off the cliff one morning."

Emily Willows is middle-aged, widowed, wealthy, and bored. When she makes those flippant remarks to her son over coffee one Friday, she has no inkling that within a few hours she will be facing the most terrifying situation of her life. Nor could she have guessed that she will be confronting it with the enigmatic young woman who moved in next door a few months ago and who has hardly spoken a word to her since. And neither of them has realized yet that after this meeting, their lives will never be the same again.

My first time read of this author

I thoroughly enjoyed volume one and coming back for more. One comment I’d like to mention is the reader seems to have a one monotone voice which personally I found to be a bit uninspiring.

I want more

Great intro to the author. Also like the narrator who I am familiar with. Looking forward to hearing the next book.

Great story - inconsistent performance

Like other reviewers I struggled with the performer whom I know from Joy Ellis’ crime series to be an excellent guide through a good story.

Not sure what happened here; she improved greatly nearing the end when many voices and accents were required - became quite animated and interesting.

That said, this is a terrific story, and Grainger remains one of my favourite writers. Although it starts as a seeming-cozy mystery, this quickly amps up to be a thrilling yarn.

Great story marred by narrator...

This narrator nearly made me leave the story unfinished. But Peter Grainger's story telling was compelling enough for me to persevere. I find the narration rushed and monotone. The voice pitch grates on my ears. Perhaps Gildart Jackson's narrations of Grainger's other books spoiled me, as it matched the content and writing type of Peter's books much more closely. The only way I could listen to this story was because I slowed down the narration slightly.

Loved it!

Would like to hear more about the character Lane and where she goes from here.

The narrator did a fantastic job of the mother character…would enjoy listening to an entire book in that character!

Great story!

I really enjoyed the feel good way the story progresses and the characters develop in the timeline. Lots of sarcastic humour of course and a great ending
Looking forward to more

My only complaint…too short

Had high expectations of this book. I am a huge fan of DCI Smith. This is quite different but I like the characters, and enjoy it tremendously.

Short, but very good!

Another great series start by Peter Grainger. Willows & Lane join the illustrious company of the characters in Kings Lake of DC Smith, Freeman, Waters et al. This story is not set at Kings Lake.

The pace of this first tale is non-stop and held my attention throughout. I can’t wait to continue enjoying this and the other two series.

Lane is an enjoyable and recommendable story!
