The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.

Description
Throughout her blockbuster career, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult has seamlessly blended nuanced characters, riveting plots, and rich prose, brilliantly creating stories that "not only provoke the mind but touch the flawed souls in all of us" (The Boston Globe). Now, in her highly anticipated new book, she has delivered her most affecting novel yet - and one unlike anything she's written before.
For more than a decade, Jenna Metcalf has never stopped thinking about her mother, Alice, who mysteriously disappeared in the wake of a tragic accident. Refusing to believe that she would be abandoned as a young child, Jenna searches for her mother regularly online and pores over the pages of Alice's old journals. A scientist who studied grief among elephants, Alice wrote mostly of her research among the animals she loved, yet Jenna hopes the entries will provide a clue to her mother’s whereabouts.
Desperate to find the truth, Jenna enlists two unlikely allies in her quest. The first is Serenity Jones, a psychic who rose to fame finding missing persons - only to later doubt her gifts. The second is Virgil Stanhope, a jaded private detective who originally investigated Alice’s case along with the strange, possibly linked death of one of her colleagues. As the three work together to uncover what happened to Alice, they realize that in asking hard questions, they'll have to face even harder answers.
As Jenna's memories dovetail with the events in her mother's journals, the story races to a mesmerizing finish. A deeply moving, gripping, and intelligent pause-resister, Leaving Time is Jodi Picoult at the height of her powers.

Not Jodi Picoults BEST
This book was just fine.....not the worst but certainly not great. Part 1 was incredibly hard to get into, it was like watching paint dry. The characters had a lot of potential but fell very flat. I love Jodi Picoult's books but this one just didn't have the same immediate hook that others do. I held out until the end to see how the story came together and it was as usual, a twist ending, but it ended with a lot of unanswered questions.
All being said, I am happy I stuck it out until the end just to see how the mystery played out but I would never think of picking this book up again and it would be well at the bottom of the list of other Jodi Picoult books I recommend to people to read.

Disappointed.
I usually enjoy her stories, this one didn’t do it for me. It felt disjointed not just because of the leaping back and forth in time but mostly due to the disconnected characters. Though the story was well performed and the characters had a little “life” in them. I saw (or heard) dead people long before the ending and this bothered me as neither the book summary or reviews I’d read had given me any indication that this story would require me to suspend belief in reality. Had I known that this was a story of the afterlife and a spiritual world I wouldn’t have bought it (or used a credit). I’ve no objection to this theme, I just prefer knowing that’s what I’ve chosen to read beforehand. It reminded me a little of the movie Sixth Sense, which I enjoyed immensely.
I decided not to return the book as it wasn’t a total waste of time, it helped put me to sleep most nights.

I dare you not to cry
I loved this story and how beautifully written it was.
Thank you Jodi Picoult for another great read.
I felt there was some chapters of this book that could have been left out; as much as I enjoyed the elephant storyline in this novel, it would have been nice to have more of the human storyline present as it did drag on from time to time.
I would recommend this book; very twisty ending!
