Publisher's Summary

Lieutenant Eve Dallas puzzles over a bizarre suicide bombing in a Wall St. office building in Leverage in Death, the next in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from J.D. Robb...

For the airline executives finalizing a merger that would make news in the business world, the nine a.m. meeting would be a major milestone. But after marketing VP Paul Rogan walked into the plush conference room, strapped with explosives, the headlines told of death and destruction instead. The NYPSD’s Eve Dallas confirms that Rogan was cruelly coerced by two masked men holding his family hostage. His motive was saving his wife and daughter - but what was the motive of the masked men?

Despite the chaos and bad publicity, blowing up one meeting isn’t going to put the brakes on the merger. All it’s accomplished is shattering a lot of innocent lives. Now, with the help of her billionaire husband Roarke, Eve must untangle the reason for an inexplicable act of terror, look at suspects inside and outside both corporations, and determine whether the root of this crime lies in simple sabotage, or something far more complex and twisted.

You will not be disappointed!

Another winner from JD Robb. This was a thrill ride until the very end. I am a Librarian and recommend this series every chance I get. #Audible1

Love these novels!!!!

With this being book No. 47, you would expect that there would be some rework of a previous theme, but Nora Roberts aka J.D. Robb never fails to deliver a fresh take on a murder mystery, or her main characters.

The humour, the typical Dallas mix-ups with phrases, never fail to draw a laugh, sometimes in the oddest moments.

Susan Ericksen IS the only narrator for these novels, making both Roarke and Dallas come alive. Kudos for her skill and talent.

Don't miss out on this great read.

My First 'In Death' Novel..Aaaaand My Last

I can totally get the popularity of this series of police procedurals set in a future New York City (2061 in this one). Nora Roberts's prose (writing as 'J.D. Robb') is competent (fed by a workable vocabulary, believable dialogue, and vivid descriptions), she incorporates some explicit sex (as obligatory & irrelevant as it may be), her characters are interesting (including love interests and comic relief), and her plot is intriguing (starting with someone forcing a corporate bigwig to commit a suicide-bombing by threatening his family and growing from there) - but the implausibility is hard to overcome. Some of the events/criminal acts/action scenes are genuinely eyeroll-worthy.
It is also sadly obvious why there are 79 (SEVENTY-NINE!!) episodes (and counting) in this series: 'Leverage In Death' is glaringly superficial. The book is well-written, populated with honest-to-God "characters" (Detective Peabody is genuinely goofy, for example), and well-paced.. but is cardboard-cutout formulaic. 'Robb' is clearly giving readers what they expect.
Finally, the book feels somewhat "rushed" (as in "Let's finish this up and get onto the next one").

Unfortunately, Susan Erickson's narration worsens my impression: She reads with creditable diction, timbre, cadence, and emotiveness - but much too slowly (listen at 1.20X); melodramatically (relax, Ms. Erickson); with occasionally silly voice-acting (literally no-one regularly talks like the kid from 'Dexter's Laboratory' IRL); and with a striking lisping sibilance that the Brilliance Audio sound engineers are unable to soften (I recommend listening to the Sample before you buy this audiobook.. the 'Sylvester the Cat' performance is occasionally cringeworthy but you might be able to get past it.. I largely did).

I bought this recording on sale, and the $6.56 CDN I paid for it wasn't a total waste - the book is a decent distraction for a couple of snowy afternoons - but based on this 5/10 star effort, I won't be listening to any more of the series (nor reading them).

Another successful story

I love these stories I can't wait to listen to them and this one has made me laugh out loud, cry a few tears and sigh that it is over way to soon.

Overwritten. Overacted

My first book by this writer and likely my last. The writing feels like a bad TV series with an annoying laugh track. Simplistic and predictable, the tough female cop role is overdone and follows type. I prefer my stories more nuanced.
