the fantasy aspects great

The fantasy world makes sense and is creative but the real world approach to legal activities is confusing and seem like the book doesn't understand basic human right that would protect the main character from getting into trouble

Awesome!

Can't wait for the next one! Perfect voice acting too! If you love the possibilities of online games and a great story of struggle and perserverance this is definitely the book for you!

Loved (almost) every minute of it

If like playing DnD, Skyrim, Fallout any RPG with a character sheet, this book is for you. It's goblins and ogres not raiders and wastelanders.

I was hesitant at first, I had never read a book of this type but I sure have played a heck of a lot of RPG. So glad I took. a chance. The story was great, characters were well rounded (not in the attribute sense).

The narrator? OMG what a fantastic listen he was. This book has many characters that speak often, he nails all of them. Even all the female ones. Well worth whatever I paid for it.

An enthusiastic 10/10!

A great start to a series I'm looking forward to!

This story is great, one of the best in the new genre of LitRPG, it's fantasy meets video games mixed with stories of characters being forced to change & learning to adapt to their new circumstances & paradigm. Along with some mysteries going on in the background that just start to be revealed at the end of this first volume, I highly recommend you give this series a try!

Chapter 8 is infuriating

Reader be warned, there's a few spoilers up to chapter 8.

In chapter 8, the asshole lawyer places majority of the blame on Oren due to him choosing to continue playing a re-roled level 1 goblin character after being warned. This doesn't fully make sense...

Context... Sure :) So right out of the gate, we find out that Oren has invested approximately 3 years into New Era Online. At some point he turns this into his full time job while creating/operating a prestigious guild. Long story short, his right hand man in the guild betrays him by locking him within a magical barrier & procing an epic scroll that re-rolls his character into a level 1 goblin. Why did his righty do this? Jealousy & he'll gain his; gear, spells, title (Guild Leader), prestige, etc. So yeah there's lots to gain. Worse then being ganked!

Bit more context, sorry. We find out from his bro (Lead Designer) that works for the company who created New Era Online that the scroll his guildmate used on him, was incredibly flawed & caused major disruption to the game if activated. It was created during beta & was never supposed to be accessible / released in game upon launch. However, it somehow got patched in during updates / patches & when they realized the potential repercussions after burying their heads, they chose to half ass the fix due to cost via offering 1 million gold in game value. Meaning, they thought if players found 1 of these Epic Re-roll Scrolls, they'd just sell it / them. This is a masterful fail! Oren's bro disclosed this information which breached his NDA. He also warned Oren of the potential health risk, etc. if he chose to keep playing this re-rolled goblin character. Also, he was advised to delete the goblin character & start fresh which is complete bs too in my opinion.

Why did he not want to delete his re-rolled goblin character? He still managed to keep all his Prime skills & titles. Why are these important? They are achievements, skills, & he was the first to receive said achievements, etc. Keep in mind, this isn't just a hobby, this is his lively hood (Full time gig). In addition, this isn't just a 40 hour a week gig. It's much more than that, I assure you. I'm a gamer, regardless of luck & being incredibly gifted, in order to reach said achievements, it's so so much time.

Oh one other bit of info. Oren obviously continues to play the re-rolled level 1 goblin regardless of the warning. As he progresses, he becomes a Goblin Boss but he cannot log out. Meaning he's stuck in game (Fully immersed VR. So he's in a pod / simulator). Oren manages to get a email out using Vic & support gets in touch while in game.

Finally, we've come back to the lawyer. The lawyer advises him that he will likely not be able to logout for 6 months IRL (6 years I believe in game) while support figures out a solution. To top it off, they don't want to do this, once again due to cost. They put Oren on the back foot due to not heeding is bros advice & blackmailing him with his bro's job (Game Designer will be fired if you don't sign these NDA's & figure out solution on your own...). But here's the thing, Oren (Writer) states he's kinda screwed & has no argument. BUT what about if New Era Online had never released the Re-roll Scroll in the first place, none of this would have ever happened in the first place. Not to mention the cover up & the shatty bandaid fix that was an obvious a huge fail. I mean, had he not figured out how to contact his bro from in game, his actual physical body would likely die IRL due to no food, etc. Why didn't he throw this back at POS lawyer (Maggot-i dislike many of them)? He kinda turns tail & crawls in a hole sorta speak. This is so infuriating to me. Even if his bro was fired, sue them for millions (They're a multi billion dollar firm. They're good for it ;) & give his bro a good chunk.

Anyways, that's my rant. Not really a review but the writer perhaps shit the bed on this... Just seems unlikely based on the type of character Oren is being portrayed as...

Surprisingly engaging

The premise is one common to much scifi: a player is stuck in an ultra realistic game. But the story's commitment to certain details and game mechanics brings fresh elements to this common trope.

I was reasonably happy with the listen, but am not motivated to listen to the next one.
